Vote responsibly

In response to Riff Mattre (March 20). He seems to be under the mistaken belief that once a person is elected to the Senate or the House of Representatives, they are obligated to compete against the opposite team.

Actually, the senator or representative is obligated to represent the people who sent him or her to Washington. These include both Democrats and Republicans. They should represent what is best for his or her state, district and the United States. The fact they don’t do that is on them personally; they can always be voted out of office, and should not be re-elected.

The people of the U.S. are acting like lemmings to continue to vote for those who will not represent them. You are right. We are responsible for our own choices.
