EVSD set to host Wizards

The Harlem Wizards basketball team will visit the East Valley School District next month. The team is coming as part of a fundraiser for the Continuous Curriculum School’s Parent Teacher Student Association.

Often compared to the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters, the Harlem Wizards specialize in show basketball, with an emphasis on fundraising for schools and nonprofit organizations.

The team will face the CCS Knights at 7 p.m. May 10 at the East Valley High School gym, 15711 E. Wellesley. Tickets are available at the school, 16924 E. Wellesley, on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:30 to 3 p.m.

General admission tickets are on sale now, with a two-for-one price of $12. There are also eight exclusive reserved seats on the floor with the team for $100, which include a meet and greet opportunity with a photo. Courtside seats are $50, second-row seats are $30 and third-row seats are $20.

Scholarship winners

The Comcast Foundation recently announced Spokane and Spokane Valley recipients of its 2013-14 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards. The students will receive $1,000 scholarships for serving as role models, being involved in their schools, and striving to make a positive change in their community.

The scholarship winners are Hailey Reneau, Central Valley; Jacqueline Swanson, West Valley; Hailee Zuck, University; Kalynn Moneymaker, Shadle Park; Carson Murray, Rogers; Bruce Radigan Culbertson, St. George’s; Miriam Taylor, Ferris; and Mikayla Wash, North Central.

In a news release from Comcast, Charisse Lillie, president of the Comcast Foundation and vice president of community investment for Comcast Corp., said “Comcast seeks students who demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities and who reflect a strong commitment to community service. These students are our future leaders, and we hope these scholarships will help to power their dreams for success.”
