Hockey back in Boston with Penguins win

NHL: Hockey returned to Boston after the manhunt following the marathon bombings, and Jarome Iginla scored the tiebreaking goal that gave the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 win over the Bruins on Saturday and home-ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The game was pushed back by one day by the manhunt for a suspect, who was captured Friday night.

The postponement was the second of the week for the Bruins. Their game against the Ottawa Senators last Monday night, scheduled to start about four hours after the bombings, was rescheduled for April 28. The Bruins returned to their ice to beat Buffalo in a shootout on Thursday.

Winterhawks stifle Blazers, take 2-0 lead

WHL: Mac Carruth earned his third shutout of the post-season as the Winterhawks blanked the Kamloops Blazers 4-0 in Western Hockey League playoff action at Portland.

The 20-year-old goaltender stopped 27 shots for Portland, which has a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference final.

Pettersen tops Salas on first playoff hole

Golf: Suzann Pettersen won the LPGA Lotte Championship at Kapolei, Hawaii, beating Lizette Salas with a par on the first hole of a playoff after Salas chunked her approach shot into the water.

Pettersen closed with a 5-under 67, and Salas had a tournament-record 62 to finish at 19-under 269.

• Hoffman leads at RBC Heritage: Charley Hoffman’s quick start gave him a two-shot lead over U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson after three rounds of the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Hoffman had four birdies on his first five holes to shoot a bogey-free 5-under 66 and keep out front at 11 under on a windy, cool day at Harbour Town Golf Links.

• Toledo in front at Greater Gwinnett: Esteban Toledo, a rookie looking for his first win on the Champions Tour, has a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Greater Gwinnett Championship at Duluth, Ga.

Toledo completed his first-round 68 in the morning before shooting a 2-under 70 in the second round. Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot rounds of 77 and 70 and is nine shots off the pace.

Mertesacker heads Arsenal victory

Soccer: Arsenal moved into third place in the English Premier League, winning 1-0 at Fulham behind Per Mertesacker’s goal on a 43rd-minute header, while Sunderland, Stoke and Norwich each came away with victories that boosted their hopes to avoid relegation.

The Gunners moved into third place, ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham.

• Barcelona maintains lead without Messi: Cesc Fabregas scored in the 84th minute, and Barcelona defeated visiting Levante 1-0 to maintain a 13-point lead in the Spanish league with six games left.

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal made his first start in over a year since undergoing a liver transplant.

• Players attacked during invasion: Pitch-invading soccer fans attacked players and caused a half-hour delay during a fifth-tier match at Kidderminster in the latest bout of crowd trouble in England.

Visiting Stockport supporters raced onto the field after Kidderminster went 1-0 ahead in the 51st minute, confronting players from both teams. The referee decided to take the players off for safety reasons.

Michigan men win NCAA championship

College gymnastics: Olympian Sam Mikulak won the all-around competition and helped Michigan pull away from Oklahoma to take the NCAA men’s gymnastics title at State College, Pa.

Michigan finished with 443.200 points, and Oklahoma had 440.100 after leading by five-tenths after five events.

• Florida wins first NCAA women’s title: Top-ranked Florida rallied in the final rotation to win its first NCAA women’s gymnastics title at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

In last place after the first rotation when two gymnasts fell on the balance beam, Florida closed with a flourish on the bars to finish with a score of 197.575.

Game On Dude wins Charles Town Classic

Horse Racing: Game On Dude won the $1.5 million Charles Town Classic, holding off Clubhouse Ride on the final turn for a half-length victory at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in Charles Town, W.Va.

Ridden by jockey Mike Smith, the 6-year-old Game On Dude tracked the pace set by long-shot Percussion before taking over with a half-mile to go.

• Departing wins Illinois Derby: Race favorite Departing came on strong at the head of the stretch to win the Grade III $750,000 Illinois Derby by 3 1/4 lengths at Hawthorne Race Course.

Ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., Departing ran 1 1/8 miles race in 1:50.78 on the fast track.

• Winning Cause lives up to name: Winning Cause won the $200,000 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland to give trainer Todd Pletcher perhaps another Kentucky Derby qualifier.

Mike Brown open to Cleveland return

Miscellany: A person familiar with the situation says former Cavaliers coach Mike Brown is interested in returning for a second stint with the team.

Brown went 272-138 and went to the playoffs every year with the Cavs, but he was fired after the team was beaten by Boston in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals.

• Henderson edges Melendez, keeps crown:

Benson Henderson kept his UFC lightweight crown, outpointing Gilbert Melendez with a split decision in a fight that lived up to its promise at San Jose, Calif.

Henderson has won all seven of his UFC bouts and is 19-2 overall, while Melendez showed he deserves another chance at the title despite making his UFC debut.

• Cleverly retains WBO light-heavy title: Unbeaten Nathan Cleverly kept his minor WBO light-heavyweight belt by unanimously outpointing German challenger Robin Krasniqi at Wembley Arena in London, England.

Cleverly improved to 26-0.

• Figuero quickly grabs lightweight titles: Omar Figuero stopped Abner Cotto in the first round to win the vacant NABA and WBC Fecarbox lightweight titles at the Alamodome at San Antonio.

Figuero knocked out Cotto with 3 seconds remaining in the round.

Serena Williams evens up Fed Cup: Serena Williams evened the United States’ Fed Cup World Group playoff match against Sweden, waiting out a long rain delay to beat Johanna Larsson 6-2, 6-2 at Delray Beach, Fla.

In the opening match, Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson beat Sloane Stephens 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
