Out & About: Spring Derby coming at Lake PO
OUTFISH –The Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club’s 68th Spring Derby kicks off with a fundraiser Friday, 7 p.m., at the Sandpoint Elks Club.
Fishing runs Saturday through May 5 with a $15,000 payout including $2,500 for the top rainbow. The club is raising money to reintroduce pure-strain Gerrard rainbows to the lake.
Derby tickets cost $40; Youths age 13 and under free.

Whitewater advocate pegs area river issues
OUTFLOW – Thomas O’Keefe of American Whitewater will update paddlers on the approval for removing Mill Pond Dam on Sullivan Creek and other river-liberating projects in a program for the Spokane Canoe & Kayak Club Monday, 7 p.m., at Mountain Gear Corporate Headquarters, 6021 E. Mansfield Ave. in Spokane Valley.
O’Keefe will discuss the national group’s regional river conservation efforts, including recent dam removal success stories, revision of national forest plans and the future of river management for the Lochsa River and the Clearwater drainage.
GU wilderness films spotlight Scotchmans
OUTFIELD –Documentaries about a grassroots effort to secure wilderness status for the Scotchman Peaks area northeast of Lake Pend Oreille will be screened Thursday at Gonzaga University.
The films and a presentation by the Friends of the Scotchman Peaks Wilderness will begin at 7 p.m. at the Jepson Center’s Wolff Auditorium.
“The Fight for Wilderness in Our Backyard” is part of the Earth Week activities sponsored by GU students.

Corrections to information in Fishing 2013 section
Following are corrections for two mistakes in the 2013 Fishing special section published on April 11:
• Beginning this year, Washington residents age 50 or younger must carry a Washington State Boater Education card while operating a powerboat in state waters.
• Spring gobbler hunting seasons run through May 25 in Idaho and May 31 in Washington.
