That’s News to You answers

Here are the answers to this week’s quiz.

1. E. The U.S. is sending 200 troops to Jordan as the vanguard of a potential U.S. military force of 20,000 or more that could be deployed to intervene in Syria to secure chemical weapons arsenals or prevent the 2-year-old civil war from spreading to neighboring countries.

2. B. The ethnic Chechen brothers from Russia lived near Boston and had been in the U.S. for about a decade, an uncle said.

3. A. Students 21 or older get half-ounce samples of red and white wines to swirl in their mouths for five to 10 seconds before spitting them into cups. Underage students are relegated to tasting grape juice and olive oil. A bill in the Washington Legislature this year seeks to allow the younger students to taste wine the same way the older ones do.

4. B. Olynyk, the 7-foot forward from Kamloops, B.C., was a consensus All-American as well as an academic All-American selection.

5. C. NASA scientists announced Thursday that the Kepler mission had confirmed finding three planets orbiting in their stars’ so-called habitable zones – that “Goldilocks” region where temperatures are not too hot and not too cold. The planets’ sizes and proximity to their stars mean that they could be rocky and could have liquid water, two attributes thought necessary for a planet to harbor life.
