Bulldogs’ baseball streak ends at 11

Gonzaga’s 11-game baseball winning streak came to an end Sunday as Pepperdine unloaded 13 hits in dealing the 24th-ranked Bulldogs a 10-4 West Coast Conference defeat in Malibu, Calif.

Chris Amezquita hit a three-run home run in the fourth to cap an eight-run rally by the Waves (21-17, 9-6 WCC) that overcame a 2-0 GU lead. All the Pepperdine runs scored after two outs.

Gonzaga (26-11-1, 13-5), which won the first two games of the series, continues atop the WCC standings with one of its closest pursuers, BYU, visiting this week.

Cory Lebrun, on an infield out, and Travis Forbes, with a squeeze bunt, drove in runs for Gonzaga.

• Squandered opportunities were costly as Washington State dropped a 2-1 Pac-12 decision to California at Berkeley, Calif.

WSU (19-18, 6-9 Pac-12) had runners on in eight of the nine innings, but only managed to score in the fifth on Jason Monda’s second of three hits. He drove in Collin Slaybaugh, who had singled with two outs and took second on a wild pitch.

That gave the Cougars a lead they nursed into the bottom of the ninth when the Bears (18-21, 7-11) scored on RBI singles by Mitchell Kranson and Mike Reuvekamp to take the rubber game of the three-game series.

• Ben Wetzler pitched a four-hit shutout as No. 5 Oregon State (30-8, 11-4 Pac-12) avoided a series sweep with an 8-0 Pac-12 win over Washington (11-25, 5-9) in Seattle.

• Carson Blumenthal pitched his first career shutout, blanking Willamette on five hits in Whitworth’s home finale, as the Pirates defeated the Bearcats 15-0 in Northwest Conference action.

The Pirates (11-22-1, 6-15 NWC) backed the sophomore from Mt. Spokane with 17 hits and three RBIs each from Jeremy Druffel (Pullman), Danny Jordan (University) and Blake Thoren.

Softball

A 9-4 loss to Pacific Lutheran in the loser’s-bracket final of the Northwest Conference tournament in McMinnville, Ore., ended Whitworth’s season with a 23-20 record.

PLU went on to lose 3-2 to Linfield in the tournament’s championship game as the seventh-ranked Wildcats earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Whitworth had a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third as freshman Megan John scored one run and drove in two. But PLU erupted for seven in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Lindsey Matsunaga’s grand slam.

• Washington and Stanford split a Pac-12 doubleheader in Seattle, the 15th-ranked Cardinal winning 6-4 before the No. 14 Huskies won 7-1.

Hooch Fagaly homered in both games for UW (34-13, 12-6 Pac-12) and drove in three runs and Kaitlin Inglesby homered and drove in three runs for the Huskies in the second game.

Men’s golf

With four players in the top 12, Whitworth captured the Northwest Conference tournament championship by five strokes, 593-598, over Linfield at the OGA Course in Woodburn, Ore.

Freshman brothers Lyle and Oliver Rudnicki shot 4-over 148s to finish in a five-way tie for fifth and Jesse Salzwedel (150) and Stephen Plopper of Mead (151) were 11th and 12th. Adam Ruben of Linfield was medalist at 2-under 142.

Women’s golf

Eastern Washington put together its lowest scoring round of the season to come out of the first day of the Big Sky Conference Championships in Chandler, Ariz., in a two-way tie for fourth, 11 shots back of leader Portland State.

The Eagles compiled a 301, led by Marissa Borja’s 1-over-par 73 that has her in a five-way tie for fifth with two more rounds to go. Britney Yada led PSU to a nine-shot lead with a 2-under 70 for first-day medalist honors.

• Whitworth senior Emily Guthrie finished second in the Northwest Conference tournament on the OGA Course in Woodburn, Ore., with a 16-over 160 and the Pirates finished third.

With Chelsea Bayley of Lakeland (164) and Nicole Lomax (165) in the top nine, the Pirates had a 673. George Fox won at 638. Whitman (662) was second, getting a 168 from Alyssa Maine (Freeman) and a 174 from Elaine Whaley (Gonzaga Prep).

Women’s rowing

Washington State’s varsity four raced to a 3.6-second victory over No. 12 Notre Dame with No. 15 Wisconsin third in the Group B final at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, Calif.

The Cougars’ varsity eight placed second in its Group B final, the novice eight was third in its Grand Final and the second varsity eight was third in its final.
