Obituary: Myers, Sandy Sandulo
Age 87
She was born in St. Louis Missouri, on April 9, 1926, to Michael and Mary Alice Sandulo.
She graduated, salutatorian, at age 15, from University City High School in St. Louis.
Sandy was fiercely independent, witty, charming, and a young beauty.
At age 16, she left St. Louis for New York City where she worked at a dress factory and modeled.
Later, she lived and worked in Chicago and California.
As a young woman, Sandy had many interests, including, painting, designing dresses, hunting and fishing.
She was also known to be a wonderful cook.
According to Sandy, she arrived in Spokane in 1952 by literally “putting a pin in a map.”
In Spokane, Sandy worked at the US Attorney’s office and later as Chief Deputy Clerk of the Federal Court of the Eastern District of Washington.
In 1957, she met Smithmoore P. Myers, (Smitty) the love of her life.
According to Smitty and Sandy, it was love at first sight.
The two of them started dating on April 18, 1959, and married in 1982.
Though they had no children of their own, they claimed 39 “kids,” some of them younger friends, some of them neighbors, some of them law students.
Sandy hugged everyone she met, and gave generously to those less fortunate, assisting many of her “kids” and “grandkids” through college and giving financial aid to anyone and everyone she met who was in need.
Sandy and Smitty spent their time together traveling, gardening, reading, and dining out.
They were generous to a fault.
They loved to treat their friends to lunch or dinner at local restaurants-never permitting their friends to reciprocate.
Local restaurateurs knew them well and the wait-staff was always rewarded by Smitty with a handsome tip and by Sandy with hugs and candy.
Sandy was also well known for the numerous cards and letters she sent to friends, relatives, and acquaintances and her annual tongue in cheek Christmas letters were looked forward to with delight.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Smitty Myers, her nephew, Michael Sandulo (Meg) of St. Louis, Missouri, her many kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, her devoted caretaker, friend and favorite kid, Charlene Arnold.
Special thanks to Bud and Gertrude Evans and John and Shirley Miller who never failed to visit and assist Sandy during her later difficult years.
