Kings decision still wait-and-see

SEATTLE – NBA commissioner David Stern said last week that a recommendation from the league’s Relocation and Finance committee on the Seattle/Sacramento saga could come as early as today.

If that meeting is really to be held this week, however, no one seemed to know Wednesday.

The league office reported there was nothing to update on the Seattle/Sacramento tussle over the Kings, and one league source also said it was not yet known when that meeting will be held.

On two occasions last week in New York, Stern laid out the basic timeline of what comes now as the league decides whether to approve a sale of the Kings to a group led by Chris Hansen that would relocate them to Seattle, or deny the sale and leave the team in Sacramento.

Once the 12-person relocation/finance meets and makes a recommendation, NBA bylaws require a grace period of seven business days before the Board of Governors votes.

If the relocation/finance committee meets today, the earliest a vote could come is May 6.

Stern said April 17 that representatives from each city would be “afforded an opportunity to address the (BOG)” one more time before it votes.

The Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday that a source said Stern was “anguishing” over the process.

The Bee also reported that employees of the Kings in Sacramento had been told to “hang tight” and continue their work as usual.
