Gonzales helps Gonzaga snap three-game losing skid

 

Marco Gonzales (6-2) worked eight innings and freshman Caleb Wood homered for the second consecutive game Thursday as Gonzaga opened a three-game West Coast Conference series with a 6-4 win over BYU (20-16, 7-6) at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The Bulldogs (27-13-1, 14-5) snapped a three-game losing streak. GU’s Travis Forbes had a two-out, two-run double to right in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.

Women’s tennis

Fifth-seeded Idaho beat fourth-seeded UT Arlington 4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals at Denver.

The Vandals (13-11) will meet top-seeded Denver (16-3) in today’s semifinals.

• Washington State seniors Liudmila Vasilieva, Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras lost in singles championship play during the Pac-12 Tennis Championships at Ojai (Calif.) Valley Tennis Club.

WSU sophomore Elizaveta Luzina won twice in invitational singles to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

• Whitworth sophomore Saryn Mooney was named to the All-Northwest Conference first team and senior Jessi Steele (Eastern Washington/University High) made the second team.

Men’s tennis

Whitworth senior Cameron Williams made the All-NWC first team for a second consecutive year.
