Hurricanes go with all-Staal lineup in loss
NHL: The Carolina Hurricanes put all their Staals in their starting lineup of a 4-3 overtime loss Thursday night to the New York Rangers at Raleigh, N.C.
Eric, Jordan and Jared Staal started on the line for New York, the 10th time in the history of the four major North American pro sports leagues that three brothers have played for the same team during the same season.
Jared Staal was called up from Charlotte of the AHL on Wednesday and coach Kirk Muller said he probably would skate on Jordan’s line.
But Muller pulled a game-time surprise by putting all three on the starting line.
New York clinched a third straight Eastern Conference playoff berth with the win. Captain Ryan Callahan scored 2:55 into overtime to secure the victory for the Rangers.
• Senators clinch playoff berth: Sergei Gonchar scored 47 seconds into overtime, Erik Karlsson set up Ottawa’s first goal in his sooner-than-anticipated return from a torn Achilles tendon, and the Senators clinched a playoff berth by beating the Capitals 2-1 at Washington.
Craig Anderson made 19 saves. The only shot that got past him was Alex Ovechkin’s NHL-leading 32nd goal, which tied the game 8 1/2 minutes into the third period.
MLS decides against goal-line technology
Soccer: Major League Soccer has decided goal-line technology is over the line – the league’s budget line.
After saying last year the league was “open to using goal-line technology as soon as it is made available,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said it’s not worth the cost.
Soccer’s international rules-making body approved goal-line technology last July. FIFA announced in February that the GoalControl-4D system, which is likely to cost about $260,000 per stadium to install, will be used at the 2014 World Cup.
• Chelsea tops Basel in Europa semis: David Luiz beat goalkeeper Yann Sommer with a 22-yard free kick on the final shot of the match in the fourth minute of stoppage time, giving Chelsea a 2-1 win at Basel in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals.
Victor Moses put Chelsea in front with a header in the 12th minute, and Fabian Schaer tied the score with an 87th-minute penalty kick.
Barnes takes leads at Zurich Classic
Golf: Ricky Barnes birdied six of the last eight holes at rain-softened TPC Louisiana to take a one-stroke lead in the Zurich Classic at Avondale, La.
Barnes finished the opening round with an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey for an 8-under-par 64. Boo Weekley and Lucas Glover were a stroke back, and D.A. Points and Morgan Hoffmann shot 66.
• Masson’s 64 paces LPGA at North Texas: LPGA Tour rookie Caroline Masson shot a bogey-free, 7-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead over Carlota Ciganda after the first round of the North Texas LPGA Shootout at Irving, Texas.
While Masson has made only one of five cuts in her first LPGA season, the 23-year-old German played on the Ladies European Tour the last three years and won the 2012 South African Women’s Open.
Busch wins Short Track Showdown
Auto Racing: Kyle Busch won Denny Hamlin’s Short Track Showdown for the third time in six years. Busch, a teammate of Hamlin’s with Joe Gibbs Racing, grabbed the lead before the 5-minute pit stops that came after 46 laps, then pulled away when the race went back to green, easily holding off David Ragan at Richmond, Va.
McDermott decides to stay at Creighton
Men’s basketball: All-America forward Doug McDermott said he’ll return to Creighton for his senior year instead of declaring for the NBA draft.
McDermott was the second-leading scorer in Division I last season, averaging 23.2 points. He was an AP first-team All-American as a sophomore and junior.
Former Lions end Williams dies at 82
NFL: Sam Williams, the former Detroit Lions defensive end who also played for the Rams and Falcons, has died in Livonia, a suburb of Detroit. He was 82.
Williams played for Detroit from 1960 to 1965, after a year with the Los Angeles Rams. He spent his final two NFL seasons in Atlanta.
