Hill has record deal – it’ll help pay taxes
Singer Lauryn Hill says she has signed with Sony to pay her overdue taxes. Hill pleaded guilty last year to not paying federal taxes on $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007. The 37-year-old posted on her Tumblr blog late Thursday that she “signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes.”
The total Hill owes is in dispute, but it is around $1 million. Her next sentencing date in New Jersey is May 6.
Hill also says she’s working on new music. She hasn’t released much music since her 1998 solo debut, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” It has sold more than 10 million albums and won five Grammy Awards.
Hill writes that she’s not only signing with Sony because of her legal woes, but also because she needs to express her creativity.
Parker doesn’t show, delaying trial
Trial has been delayed for a man accused of burglarizing “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker’s home on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, after Parker didn’t show up for a recent hearing.
Parker was subpoenaed to testify in the first-degree burglary case against former Kauai police officer Joseph Bonachita, who’s accused of breaking into Parker’s Wailua home in 2009. Bonachita is also accused of threatening Parker and a woman with a knife.
Mark Zenger, a Kauai attorney representing Parker, said Friday that Parker wasn’t aware he had to appear in person and the trial would have been delayed anyway for other reasons.
Parker will be on the island for a hearing May 29, and depending on how things go at that hearing, the trial will begin June 3, and Parker will be there for that as well, Zenger said.
“He got his wires crossed on this last hearing,” Zenger said. “He was apologetic in the extreme to all concerned.”
Guitar-playing Weir takes tumble
The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir fell onstage while strumming his guitar at a concert in Port Chester, N.Y. Video posted online shows the 65-year-old musician collapsing Thursday night during a performance with Furthur. He was quickly helped off the floor as the crowd cheered him on.
Weir is on tour with Furthur, the band he formed with fellow Grateful Dead member Phil Lesh. Lesh told the crowd Thursday that Weir had been suffering from a strained shoulder.
The band’s next show is scheduled for today in Atlantic City, N.J.
