Gonzaga Prep wins team title at Inland Empire

Led by the strong play from its boys, Gonzaga Prep did just enough to edge West Valley of Yakima for the Inland Empire Tournament tennis title Saturday in Spokane.

Despite not having any singles or doubles champions, the Bullpups finished with 151 points, one more than the Rams. Lewis and Clark had four doubles teams claim titles, but the Tigers finished in third.

G-Prep’s Alex Marcinkowski lost in the No. 1 singles title match and Daniel Sheppard fell in the No. 2 singles championship match. The Bullpups’ No. 1 mixed doubles duo of John Kraft and Emily Ryan lost a three-set title match.

Lewis and Clark got most of its team points from its doubles pairs. Luke Brittan and Jordan Strandness won at No. 1, Kenny Woodhead and Jacob Larson won at No. 2, and Carter Powers-Beggs and Jacob Johnson took the title at No. 3.

LC’s Robbie Mick and Marie Pariseau won the No. 2 mixed doubles title.

The tournament featured 47 teams from Washington and north Idaho.

Mead took fourth place, Pullman took ninth, Mt. Spokane was 10th and Coeur d’Alene finished in 11th.

Also in the top 20 was Central Valley (13th), University (14th), Clarkston (15th), Moscow (16th), West Valley (17) and Sandpoint (19th).
