GU women in NCAA golf

The Gonzaga University women’s golf team has been selected for the first time to participate in the NCAA Division I Championships.

GU, second in the West Coast Conference Championships for the second time in three years, received an at-large invitation to the 72-team field and was assigned the No. 16 seed in the 24-team Central Regional hosted by Oklahoma May 9-11.

Nationally 10th-ranked Washington will be the No. 4 seed in the Central Regional. It is the 20th NCAA appearance for the Huskies, who finished second or better in 11 tournaments this season, including runner-up in the Pac-12 Championships.

• Freshman Brigid Rypien (North Central) tied for sixth at 87 and her Community Colleges of Spokane team placed fifth in the weather-plagued NWAACC Suncadia Tournament in Roslyn, Wash.

The 36-hole tournament was reduced to Sunday’s 18-hole round by snow Monday.

• Two former Greater Spokane League standouts who led Northern Arizona to the Big Sky Conference championship earned postseason honors.

Savana Bezdicek from Mt. Spokane was named the Big Sky Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the all-conference first team. She averaged 76.15 strokes per round and was medalist in two events.

Kaitlen Parsons, a junior from University, was named to the second team.

Men’s golf

Led by freshman Cooper Wright from Moscow, Idaho, Community Colleges of Spokane wrapped up the NWAACC regular-season championship by capturing the snow-plagued Neutral Site Invitational in Cle Elum, Wash. CCS outscored runner-up Green River 293-302.

Wright shot a 5-under-par 67 during Sunday’s blustery round and was declared the champion when snow wiped out Monday’s round. It is his first collegiate medalist honor.

CCShas won 14 straight tournaments, including eight this season.

• Washington’s Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) is tied for third at 4-under 72 after the first round of the Pac-12 Championships in Los Angeles.

The Huskies are third at 709, 14 shots back of leader Cal.

Washington State is 12th at 755.
