Volunteers sought to help kids shop

EAST CENTRAL – Big Brothers and Sisters are sponsoring a shopping day for 147 low-income youths in the program from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Fred Meyer, 400 S. Thor St.

Volunteers are needed to help the youngsters shop for back-to-school items using a $100 gift card. Volunteer check in is at 7:30 a.m. Call: (509) 328-8310.

Hospice scramble fundraiser Friday

WEST SPOKANE – Hospice of Spokane is hosting its annual Scramble for Hospice on Friday with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. at Indian Canyon Golf Course, 4304 W. West Drive.

Registration for the tournament is $100, and it includes cart rental, greens fees, goody bag, prizes and dinner following the tournament.

Free parenting classes start next week

EAST CENTRAL – Circle of Security Parenting is hosting free parenting classes about how to overcome acting-out behaviors in children, strengthen relationships and build secure attachments.

Classes will be Thursdays through August, from 9-11:30 a.m. The programs include light breakfast and registration is required. Classes are at the Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services and Administration building at 514 E. Eighth Ave.

Youth concert helps Sally’s House

RIVERFRONT PARK – The Spokane Youth Symphony will present a concert benefitting The Salvation Army’s Sally’s House today at 6 p.m. in the Lilac Bowl at Riverfront Park.

Cash mob Tuesday at farmers market

CHENEY – The West Plains Chamber of Commerce is hosting a cash mob – an informal invite to shop at a specific business – on Tuesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Cheney Farmers Market.

The market is in the parking lot at Cheney City Hall, 609 Second St., and features a wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as crafts, jams and jellies. Call: (509) 747-8480.

Garage sale raises funds for SCRAPS

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service will present the Bark-it Market garage sale at its future location, 6815 E. Trent Ave.

Donations of household items, clothes, tools and pet supplies are now being accepted at the current SCRAPS location, 2521 N. Flora Road.

The sale will be Aug. 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All the proceeds will benefit the SCRAPS animal medical fund which provides treatment and rehabilitation to homeless or injured animals in the area.

Picnic for Purple Heart recipients

SPOKANE – Area recipients of the Purple Heart military decoration and their families are invited to observe National Purple Heart Recipient Recognition Day at a barbecue Sunday.The local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is sponsoring the event at Comstock Park, on 29th Avenue between Post and Howard streets on Spokane’s South Hill.

Activities start at 11:30 a.m. and include a flag raising and speakers, followed by a barbecue.

Aug. 7 is National Purple Heart Recipient Recognition Day.

The military medal is awarded to those wounded in combat or to survivors of those killed in combat.
