St. Louis welcomes stars from glory days

The St. Louis Rams welcomed star receiver Isaac Bruce to camp Thursday evening and it didn’t take him long to make an impact.

After talking to receivers throughout the practice session, Bruce spent at least 10 minutes working one-on-one with rookie wideouts Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey and Emory Blake on getting off the line of scrimmage.

Bruce is expected to be here for nearly a week. Coach Jeff Fisher said that Torry Holt is also expected soon.

What can the Rams’ young receivers learn from the former stars?

“It’s the subtle things … the little detailed things, seeing things from their perspective,” Fisher said. Wide receivers coach Ray Sherman “is a really good football coach and welcomes both of those guys in as far as the young guys are concerned.”

Thursday’s practice, which drew 1,128 fans, produced some solid play on both sides of the ball.

Eagles excuse Cooper

The Philadelphia Eagles have excused Riley Cooper from all team activities after the wide receiver was caught on video making a racial slur.

The Eagles and Cooper announced the decision Friday. Cooper apologized profusely Wednesday after a video of him using the N-word at a Kenny Chesney concert last month surfaced on the Internet. The Eagles immediately fined him.

Cooper said the last few days have been incredibly difficult and he will step away to seek counseling.

The Eagles did not set a timetable for Cooper’s return.

Asa Jackson suspended

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Asa Jackson has been suspended without pay for the first eight games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance- enhancing substances.

Jackson received a four-game suspension as a rookie last season for the same reason. This suspension is for eight games because it’s his second violation. He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Nov. 4.

Quick kicks

The Oakland Raiders signed kicker Sebastian Janikowski to a four-year extension, ensuring the franchise’s leading scorer will remain with the team through at least 2017. Janikowski is coming off the best season of his career. He converted a career-best 91.2 percent (31 of 34) of his field-goal attempts in 2012. The only misses came from 51, 61 and 64 yards. … San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver will miss the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Culliver was injured Thursday during a non-contact drill. … The 49ers signed wide receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins to one-year deals. The 49ers made the moves to help bolster a receiver unit that has been decimated by injuries.
