Eastern anglers take fourth at nationals

 

The Eastern Washington University bass fishing team placed fourth in the Carhartt College Series National Championship, missing first place by more than 8 pounds of fish, but earning a berth to another select national fishing tournament.

Nick Barr and Jarred Walker of EWU caught five fish – totaling 9 pounds, 4 ounces – Saturday at Lake Chatuge near Young Harris, Ga., to end the event with a three-day total of 14 fish weighing 34 pounds, 8 ounces.

Jacob Nummy and Tom Frink of Auburn University-Montgomery won the championship with a total of 15 fish weighing 43 pounds, 3 ounces.

The top four teams qualified for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Bracket Championship, the winner of which will earn a spot in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic set for February on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville.

Administration

The Spokane Chiefs have hired Brian Cobb as the organization’s new director of media relations.

Cobb was a public relations and marketing intern for the Seattle Thunderbirds during the 2011-12 season, while pursuing his master’s degree in Sport Administration and Leadership from Seattle University. He also has a degree in political science from Washington State.

Cobb replaces Jay Stewart, who was recently promoted to vice president/sponsorships.

Basketball

The Papermill Printing men’s team won another championship at the Washington State Senior Games in Olympia.

Playing in the 60-64 age bracket, Papermill – whose team members included Jon Heimbigner, Jack Soliday, Bill Maxey, Doug Watson and Terry Souhrada – went 4-0, beating Magnuson Park of Seattle 61-50 for the title.

Soliday won the 60-64 free throw shooting contest, making 24 of 25 attempts.

Golf

A Gonzaga University golfer, junior-to-be James Fahy, earned a top-15 finish at the 47th Pacific Coast Amateur, tying for 12th.

Fahy closed out the four-day tournament, held at the Capilano Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, B.C., July 23-26, with a 2-over par 282 (71-67-72-72).

Tyler Raber, of El Macero, Calif., won with an 8-under par 272.

Soccer

Gonzaga University men’s soccer coach Einar Thorarinsson announced the addition of six players who will join the team on Aug. 14 when players report for fall camp. They are: Forward Graison Le (Coeur d’Alene HS), forward Jakob Granlund (Denmark), midfielder Jalen Crisler (Everett), defender David Sigurdsson (Iceland), midfielder Cody Street (Beaverton, Ore.) and defender Nick Ulowetz (Marysville, Wash.).
