Dana Graphics, Gibson’s Nursery earn baseball championships
Dana Graphics and Gibson’s Nursery won championships to conclude the Spokane Valley Baseball League season.
Top-ranked Dana Graphics, from Otis Orchards, capped a 12-1 Midget season with a taut 9-7 victory over Velis Family Dentistry (Sunrise Elementary).
Gibson’s Nursery (Opportunity) finished 11-3, escaping upset-minded Regal Satellite (Sunrise) 8-7 for the Pee Wee crown.
Regal Satellite had entered the tournament with a 5-6 record, but shocked previously unbeaten Lydig (Chester) 28-15 on its way to the finals and led Gibson’s 7-1 after four innings.
The eventual champs scored seven runs over the final three innings, plating the winner on Tyler Gates’ walk-off, two-out single in the seventh. Gates finished 2-for-3 and scored twice.
In the Midget title game, regular-season leader Dana Graphics jumped to a 7-0 advantage after two innings then withstood a rally by No. 2 seeded Velis Dentistry, which finished 10-3.
Top-three batters for Dana Graphics – Jason Gillingham, Cole Schoenwald and Walter Townley accounted for seven hits and as many runs. Schoenwald was 3-for-4.
Velis’ Daniel Norfolk was also 3-for-4 and slugged two home runs that accounted for nearly all his team’s runs.
