In brief: Bank robber seen on security cameras

Sheriff’s deputies are searching for a robber who held up a US Bank branch in a Spokane Valley grocery store Monday morning.

Security cameras captured images of a man who is seen walking up to the counter with a note that police say demanded money. The suspect appears to be in his 40s.

He wore a green baseball cap and “a blue mechanic style jumpsuit.” He did not show a weapon and left the Albertson’s at the intersection of Trent Avenue and Argonne Road heading west just before 11 a.m. Monday.

Ten robberies have been committed in the area during the past two weeks.

A 27-year-old man shot and killed himself in his Spokane Valley apartment hours after a standoff with Spokane County sheriff’s deputies began Sunday evening, authorities said.

Deputies were called to the apartment in the 15600 block of East Fourth Avenue around 5 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. The man’s wife called 911, saying she was having a dispute with her husband and that he was armed and threatening suicide. The wife and her three children were not in the apartment when deputies arrived.

Missing girl found; suspect in custody

A license plate reader along Interstate 90 near Post Falls flagged a car that Coeur d’Alene police later stopped to arrest a 24-year-old man suspected of kidnapping 14-year-old Ashley Barbour.

The girl hadn’t been seen since July 26. The teen was taken into custody as arrangements were being made to return her to Colville. Douglas E. Hawkins faces felony charges.
