In brief: Missing woman found alive, well

From Wire Reports

DENVER – Police in the Colorado town of Manitou Springs say a woman who was reported missing after a deadly mudslide has been found safe.

Police said Monday that the Manitou Springs resident is fine and doesn’t want her name released.

MLK memorial work running late

WASHINGTON – The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial may not be ready for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington later this month.

Workers had been removing a disputed inscription from the memorial, but an architect said a contracting problem has stalled the project.

Architect Ed Jackson Jr. said the side of the memorial’s “Stone of Hope” is unfinished because the main contractor doesn’t have insurance to complete sandblasting to refinish the stone surface.

Workers accidentally stained it a brownish color Friday during an alternate blasting process.

Plea deal reached in hepatitis C outbreak

CONCORD, N.H. – A hospital technician accused of causing a multistate hepatitis C outbreak last year will plead guilty in federal court in exchange for a prison term of 30 to 40 years.

The deal would allow David Kwiatkowski to avoid criminal charges in Kansas, Maryland and Georgia.

Kwiatkowski is accused of injecting himself with the painkiller fentanyl using stolen syringes, then replacing the drug with saline before the tainted syringes were used on patients.

Mayor may rebut circulating recall

SAN DIEGO – San Diego’s beleaguered mayor is facing a deadline to respond to organizers of a recall effort who say he needs to leave office after more than a dozen women alleged he made unwanted advances or inappropriate statements to them.

Under the city’s municipal code, Mayor Bob Filner must submit a written response of 300 words or less to the clerk’s office by Monday.

The petition can begin circulating whether he responds or not.

But if he does, his written response must be included on the petition. Otherwise the petition must state that he did not respond.
