Isner pulls out upset

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic’s bid to become the first player to win all nine Masters events has been put on hold for at least another year. Top-ranked American John Isner upset Djokovic 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open on Friday. The world’s top-ranked player has never won Cincinnati, losing in the finals four times. He needs to hoist the trophy in Cincinnati to become the first player to win all nine Masters events. Also, Rafael Nadal rallied for a vintage win over rival Roger Federer. Nadal’s 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory left him 21-10 against Federer. No. 2 Andy Murray also lost, beaten in two sets by Tomas Berdych. Berdych will play Nadal in the semifinals, while Isner takes on Juan Martin del Potro, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 winner over Dmitry Tursunov. – AP
