Blaze was held to about an acre

A person suffered minor injuries Monday from a brush fire between the Spokane River and Centennial Trail near the Spokane Valley Mall.

A Spokane Valley Fire Department engine crew driving on Indiana Avenue spotted the fire about 4:20 p.m., Capt. Jeff Bordwell said.

The fire was doused in about 20 minutes, Bordwell said. A fire investigator was called to the scene.

The land is owned by the state Department of Parks and Recreation.

Bordwell said firefighters were worried by a strong breeze and dry conditions, but the fire was held to about an acre and did not reach into trees. At Felts Field, the National Weather Service recorded sustained winds of 9 to 17 mph on Monday afternoon, said Matt Fugazzi, a meteorologist.

The weather service predicts today will be less breezy, with a high of 84 degrees in Spokane.
