Indians rally to 3-2 victory over Vancouver

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Ryan Cordell scored on Gabriel Roa’s bunt single in the top of the ninth to cap Spokane’s late-inning comeback and give the Indians a 3-2 win over Vancouver in the opener of the three-game Northwest Conference series Saturday night.

Justin Sprenger pitched a scoreless ninth to secure his fourth save of the season.

Spokane (35-33) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth in uncommon fashion. With Eduard Pinto batting, Barrett Serrato, who singled earlier in the inning and made his way to third base, stole home.

Vancouver (34-34) took a 2-1 lead in the seventh thanks to Chaz Frank’s two-run single.

Spokane tied it at 2 in the eighth when Marcus Greene earned a bases-loaded walk. Roa also had a bunt-single in the inning. Roa finished 3 for 4 at the plate, accounting for half of Spokane’s hits. He also stole a base.

Spokane starter Kelvin Vasquez pitched six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out five.

Vancouver’s Garrett Pickens, who came on to start the eighth, took the loss after walking four batters and giving up the winning run.

The win was the Indians second in a row after losing five of their previous six. Game 2 is at 1:05 today in Vancouver.
