NFL roundup: Jets trip Giants in overtime
Billy Cundiff kicked a 32-yard field goal with 8:04 left in overtime and the New York Jets defeated the host New York Giants 24-21 Saturday night.
It’s the only time the rivals will play this year unless they qualify for the cold-weather Super Bowl here in February. The way the Jets and Giants played, it’s highly unlikely.
The Jets quarterback picture got even murkier, too, despite winning the annual bragging rights game.
Rookie Geno Smith struggled. Mark Sanchez hurt his right shoulder, and his status is suddenly in question two weeks before the season opener.
Redskins 30, Bills 7: Rex Grossman threw for 171 yards, and Buffalo’s Kevin Kolb left with concussion-like symptoms in host Washington’s win.
Former Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel completed 10 of 17 passes for 63 yards and left as the Bills’ only healthy QB.
Kolb started for Buffalo after first-round pick EJ Manuel hurt his left knee in the Bills’ previous game. But Kolb was kneed in the back of the helmet after a scramble in the first quarter.Redskins punt returner Richard Crawford is out for the season with a left knee injury that he suffered in the game.
Colts 27, Browns 6: Andrew Luck threw two scoring passes, and his defense did not allow a touchdown for the second straight week as Indianapolis defeated visiting Cleveland.
The Colts scored on the opening series of both halves before Luck and most of the starters exited early in the third quarter. Luck finished 16 of 25 for 164 yards with one interception.
Eagles 31, Jags 24: Bryce Brown and Chris Polk ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns, and Philadelphia rallied to win at Jacksonville.
Nick Foles, who lost the starting job to Michael Vick earlier in the week, completed 10 of 11 passes for 112 yards in the second half.
Bucs 17, Dolphins 16: Miami’s first-team offense scored its only TD of the preseason just before halftime on its 17th play inside the opponents’ 20, but visiting Tampa Bay scored with 1:03 left in the game to win.
Chiefs 26, Steelers 20: Ben Roethlisberger and Alex Smith fought to a first-half draw and host Kansas City beat Pittsburgh in overtime.
Roethlisberger was 13 of 19 for 166 yards and a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Dwyer as the Steelers shook off two lethargic performances.
Cowboys 24, Bengals 18: Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes and Dallas’ first-team offense finally got into the end zone, beating Cincinnati at Arlington, Texas.
After completing 13 of 18 passes for 137 yards, with TD passes to Dez Bryant and Miles Austin for a 14-7 halftime lead, Romo was done.
Broncos 27, Rams 26: Rookie linebacker Alec Ogletree ruined Ronnie Hillman’s night with a strip-and-score takeaway and kept Peyton Manning from turning all those passes into points with a big interception but host Denver still defeated St. Louis.
Titans 27, Falcons 16: Jake Locker threw for 133 yards and a touchdown, and Matt Ryan was sacked five times as Tennessee beat Atlanta in Nashville.
Locker got both his first touchdown and the first turnover this preseason for the Titans.
Chargers 24, Cardinals 7: Ryan Mathews rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown in a half of play and San Diego beat mistake-prone Arizona in Glendale, Ariz., for its first preseason victory under first-year head coach Mike McCoy.
