Gonzaga men slip in polls

College basketball: Gonzaga’s loss to Dayton at the EA Sports Maui Invitational dropped the Bulldogs in both major men’s polls.

The Bulldogs (7-1) slipped from 10th to a tie for 15th with Memphis in USA Today’s top 25.

Gonzaga fell from No. 11 to No. 19 in the Associated Press rankings. GU went 3-1 last week.

Saint Mary’s (6-0), the lone unbeaten remaining in the WCC, received votes in both polls.

• The Gonzaga women are ranked No. 24 in the AP poll.

Pangos wins WCC award

College basketball: Gonzaga junior guard Kevin Pangos (pictured at top) earned his second consecutive WCC Player of the Week award.

Pangos averaged 26.3 points and four assists in three games in Maui. For the week, he averaged 22 points and made 15 of 18 3-pointers.

Two Vandals collect honors

College football: Idaho freshman punter/kicker Austin Rehkow from Central Valley was honored as the Special Teams Player of the Week for FBS independent schools.

Rehkow converted all three of his field goal attempts (25, 25 and 27 yards) and his lone PAT attempt in Idaho’s game at New Mexico State.  Rehkow also punted four times for a 48.2-yard average, including a long of 65 yards. He is the national punting average leader at 47.8 yards per punt.

WAC honors Idaho’s Madison

College basketball: Idaho senior forward Stephen Madison earned his second Western Athletic Conference men’s Player of the Week honor of the season after averaging 20.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game in two games last week.
