Hawks ride duo past Blackhawks

Kaiden Kelsey and Kelly Ramus both had double-doubles as Lakeland recovered after a slow start and beat Cheney 42-32 in a nonleague game Tuesday night in Rathdrum.

Ramus had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Kelsey added 11 points and 10 boards.

Lakeland (2-4) fell behind by 10 points at the half, but charged back in the second half. The Hawks outscored the Blackhawks (0-1) 12-4 in the third and 17-5 in the fourth.

Sandpoint 50, Priest River 40: Hailey Olin scored 16 points and the Bulldogs (2-3) pulled away in the second half and beat the host Spartans (1-1). Katlyn Summers had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Priest River.

East Valley 75, Timberlake 48: Alex Rankin led the way for East Valley with 21 points and the Knights (1-0) topped the visiting Tigers (0-1).

Kendra Morscheck added 14 points for East Valley, which outscored Timberlake by 15 points in the second half.

Newport 45, Deer Park 15: Holly Malsbury recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in leading the Grizzlies (1-0) to a victory over the visiting Stags.

Malsbury also came away with four steals. Emily Lewis added seven points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Grizzlies. Taylor Varang led Deer Park (0-1) with eight points.

Northwest Christian 57, Chewelah 26: Courtney Gray was 8 for 10 from the field and Chanel Knight shot 75 percent from 3-point range as the Crusaders (1-0) opened the season with a victory over the visiting Cougars (0-1).

Gray, whose 16 points led the Crusaders, added six rebounds and Knight secured five boards. Melissa Guske stood out defensively for Northwest Christian with five steals.

St. George’s 52, Wellpinit 23: Ceci Bergquist scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds to guide the Dragons (1-0) past the visiting Redskins (1-1). St. George’s opened the game on a 20-3 run and led by 26 points at the half.

Kettle Falls 48, Springdale 39: The Bulldogs jumped out to a 32-15 halftime lead and held on in the second half to beat the host Chargers.

Brittney Deckman recorded 12 points for Springdale, eight of which were in the fourth quarter.

Springdale (0-2) will play at Chewelah on Friday. Kettle Falls (1-0) travels to Tonasket on Saturday.

Curlew 44, Northport 26: Haleigh Gibson and Lindsey Gibson combined for 30 points as the Cougars (1-0) pulled away in the second quarter and beat the host Mustangs (0-1).

Curlew forced 29 turnovers and outscored Northport 22-5 in the second quarter after a competitive start to the game. Northport senior Kathy Higgins had nine points, 13 rebounds and five steals.

Coeur d’Alene Charter 41, Bonners Ferry 38: Sarah Haman recorded a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, as the Panthers (1-2) edged the visiting Badgers (0-1).

Coeur d’Alene Charter head coach Doug Grant stated his team “handled (Bonners Ferry’s) pressure down the stretch… and showed a lot of poise under their full-court press.”
