Local briefs: Boxing returns to The HUB and Northern Quest

Boxing: For the third time in three years, top boxers from across the United States will showcase their skills at The HUB Sports Center and Northern Quest Resort & Casino.

Northern Quest will be the host of the 2014 USA Boxing National Championships Jan. 20-25. The event will feature male and female boxers in the elite division battling for a national championship.

Both the men’s and women’s divisions will feature all 10 weight divisions, with top Olympic hopefuls competing for gold in the first elite event of 2014.

Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields will return to the site of her U.S. Olympic Team Trials win.

Preliminary action will begin on Jan. 20 and run through Jan. 23 at the HUB Sports Center. The event will move to Northern Quest on Jan. 24 with semifinal round competition. Championship round bouts will take place in both the men’s and women’s divisions on Jan. 25 at Northern Quest’s Pend Oreille Pavilion.

Pac-12 honors for WSU’s Holt

Volleyball: Washington State volleyball’s Kyra Holt was named to the Pac-12 all-freshman team and All-Pac-12 honorable mention. Holt ranked seventh in the Pac-12 with 479 kills.

The Cougars’ Emmy Allen and Hailey Bethune were all-freshman team honorable mention.

USC senior Alexis Olgard (Mead High), third in the conference with a .430 hitting percentage, made first-team All-Pac-12.

Individual awards went to Washington’s Krista Vansant (player of the year) and Jim McLaughlin (coach of the year), USC’s Ebony Nwanebu (top freshman) and Natalie Hagglund (top libero) and Stanford’s Madi Bugg (top setter).

EWU’s Harvey player of week

Basketball: Eastern Washington guard Tyler Harvey is the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball player of the week after leading the Eagles to a non-conference win over Seattle.

Harvey, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Torrance, Calif., scored a career-high 30 points in a 82-75 victory over the Redhawks.
