Pistons stop Miami streak at 10 games

NBA: Kyle Singler scored 18 points to lead seven Detroit players in double figures, Andre Drummond had 18 rebounds and the Pistons beat the Miami Heat 107-97 on Tuesday night to snap the NBA champions’ 10-game winning streak.

Greg Monroe and Rodney Stuckey (EWU) each scored 16 for Detroit, which got 15 apiece from Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings. The Pistons led by 18 before Miami got within three points in the fourth, but never trailed in the game’s final 47 minutes.

Nuggets win seventh straight: Timofey Mozgov had 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds in another superb effort by the Denver bench, and the visiting Nuggets raced by the Brooklyn Nets 111-87 for their seventh straight victory.

Thompson rallies Warriors: Klay Thompson made four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to fuel an improbable comeback, Stephen Curry added a pair of shots from beyond the arc down the stretch and the Golden State Warriors rallied from 27 points down in the second half to beat the Toronto Raptors 112-103 at Oakland, Calif.

Thompson finished with 22 points and seven assists, nearly matching Curry’s 27 and 10.

Durant powers streaking Thunder: Kevin Durant had 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder to their eighth straight win, a 97-95 victory over the slumping Sacramento Kings.

Carter-Williams has triple-double: Michael Carter-Williams had 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double, and Thaddeus Young added 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers past the visiting Orlando Magic 126-125 in double overtime.

Davis sidelined: The New Orleans Pelicans say Anthony Davis is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks because of his broken left hand.

Davis started the Pelicans’ first 16 games, averaging 18.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks.

Cook hits 24 in Duke’s victory over Michigan

College basketball: Quinn Cook had 24 points and nine assists to help No. 10 Duke (7-2) beat No. 22 Michigan (5-3) 79-69 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Durham, N.C..

Caris LeVert matched his career-high with 24 points for Michigan, though leading scorer Nik Stauskas struggled all game.

• No. 2 Arizona cruises: Aaron Gordon scored 19 points, Nick Johnson and Brandon Ashley added 18 each and No. 2 Arizona (8-0) beat Texas Tech (6-3) 79-58 at Tucson, Ariz., in the Wildcats’ first game since beating Duke for the NIT Season Tip-off championship.

Syracuse crushes Indiana: Trevor Cooney scored 21 points, Tyler Ennis added 17 points and eight assists, and No. 4 Syracuse (8-0) beat Indiana (6-2) 69-52 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Syracuse, N.Y.

Bruins top Gauchos: Jordan Adams scored 22 points and Kyle Anderson added 21 to lead No. 18 UCLA (8-0) to an 89-76 victory over visiting UC Santa Barbara (3-3).

Minutemen roll: Raphiel Putney scored 15 points, including two high-flying dunks in the final minutes, and No. 21 Massachusetts (7-0) won its first game as a ranked team since November 1998, a 69-57 victory over Eastern Michigan (5-2) at Ypsilanti, Mich.

Iowa edges Notre Dame: Aaron White scored 20 points, Devyn Marble and Jarrod Uthoff added 17 each and No. 23 Iowa (8-1) held off Notre Dame (5-2) 98-93 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Garrick Sherman had a career-high 29 points for the Irish.

Crosby connects in OT for Penguins

NHL: Sidney Crosby scored the tying goal in the third period and then won it with a brilliant individual effort 3:44 into overtime as the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 3-2,

Crosby, who tied it with a power-play goal with 12 minutes left in regulation, stole the puck just outside the New York blue line, streaked down the middle between two defenseman and jammed a backhander past goalie Anders Nilsson for his 15th goal this season.

Kesler scores twice for Canucks: Ryan Kesler scored a pair of third-period goals, leading the visiting Vancouver Canucks to a 3-1 victory over the Nashville Predators.

Sharks win sixth straight: Mike Brown had a goal against his former team and Joe Thornton scored on a 5-on-3 power play, leading the San Jose Sharks to a 4-2 victory over the host Toronto Maple Leafs for their sixth straight win.

Altidore named player of the year

Soccer: Forward Jozy Altidore has earned his first Futbol de Primera U.S. national team player of the year award.

The 24-year-old received 233 points and 52 first-place votes in media balloting released. Michael Bradley was second with 176 points and 34 first, followed by Landon Donovan with 127 points and 24 firsts.

Mariota returning for junior season

College football: Quarterback Marcus Mariota has announced that he will return to Oregon for his junior season.

Mariota has thrown 30 touchdowns this season for the Ducks, who finished the regular season 10-2.

Miami of Ohio hires Irish coordinator: Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin has accepted the job as head coach at struggling Miami of Ohio. Martin succeeds Don Treadwell, who was fired after the RedHawks lost their first five games.
