Proctor rides to win in first round of NFR

Rodeo: Grand Coolee native Shane Proctor scored an 89 on News Flash to win the first round in bull riding on Thursday at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. The victory was worth $18,629.81.

Riley and Brady Minor of Ellensburg won in team roping with a time of 4.6 seconds.

Bareback rider Ryan Gray of Cheney finished out of the money with a score of 78.5 on Bar Bandit. Tyson Durfey of Colbert also finished out of the money in tie-down roping with a time of 9.7.

Boozer leads Bulls over Heat, 107-87

NBA: Carlos Boozer scored 27 points, and the Bulls beat LeBron James and the Heat, 107-87 in Chicago.

James scored 21 points for Miami, but the Heat shot a season-low for the second straight game, converting 41.6 percent from the field.

• Clippers power past Grizzlies: Reserves Darren Collison and Jamal Crawford scored 15 points each and Los Angeles used a strong second half to win at Memphis, 101-81.

• Knicks beat Nets to end losing streak: Carmelo Anthony had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Iman Shumpert scored a season-high 17 points, and New York ended a nine-game losing streak with 113-83 romp over host Brooklyn in the first meeting of the season between the city rivals.

Andrea Bargnani scored 16 before he was ejected in the fourth quarter, Knicks fans roaring in support of him standing up to Kevin Garnett.

Canadiens win, run unbeaten streak to 9

NHL: Max Pacioretty scored his ninth goal in the last nine games and the surging Montreal Canadiens stretched their unbeaten run to nine with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Boston Bruins.

The building got quiet when Boston defenseman Johnny Boychuk was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher 4:28 into the game. Boychuk was injured on a hit by Pacioretty, who got 2 minutes for boarding. Boychuk was taken to the hospital but later released.

Pittsburgh wins fifth straight: Chris Kunitz scored twice during a four-goal second period and Sidney Crosby added three assists as the Penguins beat San Jose 5-1 in Pittsburgh for their fifth straight victory.

Rangers stifle Sabres: Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves to lead New York over host Buffalo 3-1.

Wild win late: Marco Scandella scored his first goal of the season with 1:48 left as Minnesota defeated Chicago 4-3.

Skinner hat trick lifts Carolina: Jeff Skinner scored three goals to lead Carolina to a 5-2 victory at Nashville. Justin Faulk and Riley Nash also scored for Carolina.

• Leafs win in OT: Trevor Smith scored at 4:18 of overtime to help host Toronto beat Dallas 3-2 and end a five-game skid.

The Maple Leafs won despite being outshot 50-24.

Jonathan Bernier finished with 48 saves for Toronto.

Lightning shock Ottawa: Martin St. Louis scored two goals, Ben Bishop won his 15th game this season, and host Tampa Bay beat the Senators 3-1.

St. Louis downs Islanders: Derek Roy and David Backes scored power-play goals 2:31 apart in the second period to lead St. Louis to a 5-1 home win over struggling New York. The Islanders have lost eight straight overall .

Panthers repel Winnipeg: Dylan Olsen scored his first NHL goal to help Florida beat the visiting Jets 5-2.

Jimmy Hayes, Nick Bjugstad, Tomas Fleischmann and Erik Gudbranson also scored for the Panthers, who broke a three-game losing streak.

Jones leads No. 2 Duke over Purdue

Women’s college basketball: Alexis Jones scored 22 points to lead No. 2 Duke (9-0)in a 99-78 victory over No. 16 Purdue in a Big Ten/ACC Challenge game at Durham, N.C.

Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie moved one win away from reaching 500 for her career, improving to 499-183.

K.K. Houser scored 20 points to lead Purdue (5-2).

No. 25 Iowa upsets 22nd-ranked Syracuse: Melissa Dixon scored 27 points, all in the second half, as Iowa (9-1) rallied to hand Syracuse its first loss 97-91 at Iowa City, Iowa.

Bethany Doolittle added a career-high 25 for the Hawkeyes.

Brittney Sykes scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Syracuse (8-1).

Johnson in front at World Challenge

Golf: Zach Johnson birdied four of the par 5s and shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-shot lead over Matt Kuchar in the World Challenge at Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Only five players in the elite 18-man field managed to break par at Sherwood Country Club. One of them was tournament host Tiger Woods, who had a 71.

Kuchar hit his approach to 2 feet on the final hole for a 68.

Hunter Mahan and Bubba Watson were at 70.

Donald has lead in suspended Sun City tournament: England’s Luke Donald topped the Nedbank Golf Challenge leaderboard at 5 under when first-round play was suspended for the day because of lightning in Sun City, South Africa. Donald completed 11 holes at Gary Player Country Club.

The European Tour is sanctioning the event for the first time.

Lewis leads at Dubai tournament: Stacy Lewis shot a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead during the suspended second round of the Dubai Ladies Masters in the United Arab Emirates.

Lewis, had a 9-under 135 total at Emirates Golf Course in the Ladies European Tour’s season-ending tournament.

Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg was second after a 69. Spain’s Carlota Ciganda was 7 under after a 70, and Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum was another stroke back after a 70.

Six players were unable to complete the round because of darkness.
