Area roundup: Huskies beat LSU, roll on in NCAA volleyball

Krista Vansant had 24 kills and 13 digs as the fifth-ranked Washington volleyball team recovered after dropping the first set and beat LSU in Seattle in the second round of the NCAA Championships.

Scores were 17-25, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-19.

Kaleigh Nelson added 12 kills and seven blocks and Cassie Strickland added 13 digs and seven kills for Washington (28-2).

UW’s Jenni Nogueras and Katy Beals combined for 49 assists. Cati Leak had 12 kills and 11 digs to lead the Tigers (19-13).

Kansas beat Creighton 3-1 and will play the Huskies in the third round Friday in Los Angeles, Calif.

Men’s soccer

Ben McKendry’s 37th-minute goal was the difference in seventh-seeded New Mexico’s 1-0 win over No. 2 Washington in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in Seattle.

Oniel Fisher assisted on the goal.

The loss ended the Huskies’ season. They finished with a 16-2-4 record. New Mexico improved to 14-5-2 and will play Notre Dame in the semifinals on Friday.

Track and field

Eastern Washington’s Nick Stearns and Phil Puccino reached Big Sky Conference qualifying marks in two events at the Candy Cane VI Invitational at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney

Stearns reached a qualifying score of 4,729 points in the heptathlon. During the heptathlon, he cleared 15 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault to earn a qualifying mark in that event.

Puccino had qualifying marks of 6-8 in the high jump and 46-1 1/2 in the triple jump.

Junior hockey

Kurtis Redding scored twice to help the Spokane Braves top the Grand Forks Border Bruins 3-2 in overtime in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game in Grand Forks, B.C.

Hayden Boring also scored for the Braves.

Spokane goalkeeper Jon Manlow made 44 saves.

The Braves improved to 10-18-0-3 and Grand Forks fell to 10-12-2-2.
