Obituary: Chandler, Mary Bina (Otness)

Age 79

CHANDLER, Mary Bina (Otness) June 19, 1934 - November 29, 2013 Entered the Lord’s presence on November 29, 2014.

She is survived by her two sons, Scott (Centennial, CO) and Rocky (Redmond, WA); two daughter-in-laws, Susan and Sharon; as well as six grandchildren, Courtney (27), Brandon (24), Logan (22), Marissa (20), Meagan (18), and Matthew (14).

Mary lived for over 70 years as a resident of Spokane.

She was born in Denver, Colorado on June 19, 1934.

Her father, Roy Otness was an engineer and died suddenly when Mary was six years old.

Mary’s mother, Virginia Otness, moved Mary and her three year old sister, Sarah, to Moscow, Idaho to be with other family.

Virginia later moved the family to Spokane and Mary attended Hutton grade school, and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1952.

She attended Washington State University and graduated with a degree in Education in 1956.

Mary was active with the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at Washington State as well.

Mary began a 25 year career as an elementary school teacher in the early 1960s.

She worked for both the Mead School District and Spokane School District 81.

She taught at Mead Elementary, Bryant, Ridgeview and Stevens, with most of her teaching career at Stevens.

She retired in 1988.

During retirement, Mary enjoyed shopping, playing the stock market and traveling to be with her family in the summer and holidays.

Mary moved to the Brookdale Place at NorthPointe Retirement Center (NorthPointe) in 2004.

The family would like to thank Northpointe for their loving care of Mary during her time there over the last 10 years and especially her last several weeks as well as Hospice of Spokane.

A memorial service will be on Saturday, December 14th from 2:00 to 3:00 PM at NorthPointe, 1110 E. Westview Ct., Spokane, WA 99218.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to American Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
