Cold snap freezes pipes, cancels classes in two school districts

Frigid temperatures overnight caused water pipes to freeze at Adams Elementary School in the Central Valley School District, canceling Monday’s classes. Frozen pipes also closed both schools in the Troy, Idaho district about 11 miles east of Moscow, according to a district spokeswoman. Forecasters say the cold snap that caused the pipe issues should give way this week to more-normal cloudy-rainy weather with a chance of light snow in places during the transition. The National Weather Services says temperatures are expected to remain below freezing in Eastern Washington this week with a chance of snow or light freezing rain. The transition begins Monday in Western Washington with warmer, moist air riding over the cold air mass. Highs are expected to rise into the 30s in Spokane later in the week, with chances of snow forecasted each day. Friday will bring the best chance for flakes in Spokane, with a 50-50 shot of snow, forecasters say. Little accumulation is expected. Low temperatures hit 7 in Spokane, 3 in Yakima and zero at Pullman on Monday.
