Former Mariner Morse signs with Giants

Michael Morse and the San Francisco Giants reached agreement on a one-year, $6 million contract Thursday, pending a physical, and he is expected to be the team’s starting left fielder.

Traded from Seattle to Baltimore on Aug. 30, Morse missed time this past season with a broken right pinkie and strained right quadriceps before returning from the disabled list in late July.

The 31-year-old nine-year veteran batted .215 with 13 home runs and 27 runs batted in during 88 games between the M’s and Orioles.

He will fill a void at a position the Giants had been determined to upgrade this winter, though general manager Brian Sabean went into this week’s baseball winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., uncertain of what he might be able to find to fill out his roster.

Morse will be part of an outfield featuring Angel Pagan in center field and Hunter Pence in right.

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong also finalized a $5 million, one-year contract last week to rejoin the rotation.

Tigers land Chamberlain

A person familiar with the negotiations said the Detroit Tigers and right-handed pitcher Joba Chamberlain agreed to terms on a one-year contract.

Chamberlain was 2-1 with one save in 45 games and a career-high 4.93 ERA last season for the New York Yankees.

The converted starter was 23-14 with five saves with a 3.85 ERA in 260 over seven seasons with the Yankees.

Cubs trade for Ruggiano

The Chicago Cubs acquired Justin Ruggiano from the Miami Marlins for lefty swinging Brian Bogusevic.

Ruggiano, who turns 32 in April, hit a career-high 18 homers in 472 at-bats for Miami last year. He’s a .251 hitter for his career. In 317 games, he has 37 homers and 109 RBIs.

Bogusevic, who turns 30 in February, hit .273 with six homers and 16 RBIs in 47 games last year. In 299 games over four years – the first three in Houston – Bogusevic has 17 homers and 62 RBIs with a .273 average.

Phillies ink Hernandez

A person familiar with negotiations said that right-hander Roberto Hernandez and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a one-year contract.

The 33-year-old Hernandez was formerly known as Fausto Carmona. He was arrested in January 2012 on charges of falsifying his identity that were later dropped. Major League Baseball suspended him for three weeks.

Last year, he was 6-13 with a 4.89 ERA for Tampa Bay, and he is 59-82 with a 4.67 ERA over eight seasons overall, seven with the Cleveland Indians.

The Boston Red Sox finalized their two-year, $32 million deal with first baseman Mike Napoli. Napoli hit .259 with 23 home runs and 92 RBIs this year in his first season with the Red Sox. … Outfielder Nate McLouth passed his physical and signed his two-year contract with the Washington Nationals. The 32-year-old McLouth has played nine seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh, Atlanta and the Orioles, and was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in 2008. He hit .258 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs this year. … Tomo Ohka, who last pitched in the major leagues in 2009, agreed to a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. The 37-year-old right-hander has a 51-68 career record. … Reliever Jordan Walden and the Atlanta Braves agreed to a $1.49 million, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.
