Huskies advance to NCAA volleyball regional final

Krista Vansant had 10 kills and seven digs as the third-seeded Washington volleyball team swept 14th-seeded Kansas Friday night in the third round of the NCAA tournament at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.

Scores were 25-18, 25-13 and 26-24.

The win moved the Huskies (29-2) into the regional final for the seventh time in 13 seasons under head coach Jim McLaughlin. They’ll play Southern California tonight. The Trojans advanced with 3-1 win over BYU.

A win today would give Washington its first Final Four appearance since 2006.

Kansas finished 25-8.

Wrestling

Northwest Wyoming won three matches by way of pin and edged North Idaho 24-19 in Coeur d’Alene.

Terrance McKinney (141 pounds), Jeremy Golding (149), Johnathen Dennis (174), V.J. Giulio (197) and Taylor Kornoely (285) won their matches for the Cardinals (2-2).

Women’s basketball

Brittney Newcomb scored 27 points and Eastern Oregon held on to beat Whitworth 77-71 at the Kim Evanger Classic at the Sherwood Center in Walla Walla.

The Mountaineers (10-3) built a 12-point lead early in the first half, but the Pirates (3-3) chipped away.

Kendra Lahue led four Whitworth players in double figures with 20 points.

Kayla Johnson added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves scored three second-period goals and beat the North Okanogan Knights (16-14-0-1) 5-3 in KIJHL play in Okanogan.

Justin Bonanno, Tyler Peltram, Sean Collins, Hayden Boring and Dillon Bogart scored for the Braves (11-18-0-3).
