Obituary: Bastin, Roger W.

Age 72

BASTIN, Roger W. (Age 72) Roger entered peacefully into rest on December 7, 2013 in Spokane, WA at the age of 72.

He was born on January 11, 1941 in Staples, Minnesota to Wesley and Laura Bastin.

Roger lived most of his life in the Spokane area.

He attended Millwood Grade School and West Valley High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brothers Lonnie Curtis and Jack Trebe.

Previous marriages to Ilas Buttolph (1962), had son, Wesley Howard; and Donna Mckennett (1965), son Patrick and daughter Marci Ann; Roger leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Diane of Spokane, WA.

Their sons: Christopher (Stacy) Bastin of Spokane, WA and Michael Thompson of Spokane, WA; daughter Shelley Thompson of Spokane, WA; grandchildren: Ashley, Nicole, Jessyka, Karyssa, Skylar, Madison, Brandon, Jonathan, and Bryce; great-grandchild, Kyleeah; brother, Charles (Sally) Centenari of Cusick, WA; sisters: Shirley (Don) Thompson of Pacific, WA, Gracie (Steve) Miller of Priest River, ID and Barbie Thompson of Selah, WA; and sister-in-law, Cynthia (Dusti) Trebe of Spokane, WA.

Roger had numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends whom also touched his life as well.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to friends, Tim and Gerda Niesen, who never forgot to include him in their daily lives.

Roger retired on June 30, 2000.

On July 5, 2000 he was honored by staff and management of the Spokane County Parks and Recreation Department for his 36 years of service retiring as Trades Supervisor.

His dedication with every aspect of park service was honored as well.

He installed irrigation systems, constructed buildings and shelters, including the Plantes Ferry Park development and the construction of the Centennial Trail.

He also trained and oriented staff and citizens for the department as well.

Roger was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors.

He especially loved his property on the Pend Orielle River and yearned to spend time there after retirement; however, years of disability due to heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, and emphysema made it a difficult dream.

The celebration of Roger’s life will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home, 1315 N. Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA.

Refreshments will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 801 W. 5th Ave., Spokane, WA 99204.
