Ovechkin lifts Capitals over Flyers in SO
NHL: With Capitals goalie Phillip Grubauer out in favor of an extra attacker, Alex Ovechkin scored with 48 seconds remaining to cap a late three-goal rally and the Capitals went on to beat the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in a shootout Sunday.
Mike Green cut Washington’s deficit to 4-2 with 8:40 left, and Dmitry Orlov pulled the Capitals within one with 3:31 to go. The two defensemen scored on long slap shots.
Ovechkin then tied it with his NHL-leading 27th goal.
• Blackhawks stop Kings: Jonathan Toews set up two of Chicago’s three first-period goals, and the Blackhawks cooled off the visiting Los Angeles Kings with a 3-1 victory in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference finals.
Marian Hossa had a short-handed score that snapped the Kings’ NHL-record streak of 18 games without allowing a first-period goal.
Portland handles Detroit in extra time
NBA: Damian Lillard’s spinning fadeaway with one-tenth of a second left in overtime lifted the Portland Trail Blazers to a 111-109 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Lillard was guarded well by Rodney Stuckey (EWU) as he tried to drive to the basket, but he was able to hit a tough fadeaway from about 8 feet for the win. Detroit couldn’t get off a shot before the buzzer.
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points for Portland, which rallied from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Lillard finished with 23 points.
• Blazers’ Leonard, Sixers’ Orton suspended: Portland center Meyers Leonard and Philadelphia center Daniel Orton were each suspended for one game without pay following an altercation Saturday night.
Leonard sat out the Blazers’ game at Detroit, and Orton will miss the Sixers’ game at Brooklyn tonight.
• Suns slip past Warriors: Eric Bledsoe scored seven of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and the Phoenix Suns won their fifth straight game, holding off Stephen Curry and the visiting Golden State Warriors 106-102.
Curry scored 30 points, including 20 in the second half, and Klay Thompson added 19.
• Thunder win 12th straight at home: Kevin Durant had 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and the Thunder won their 12th straight home game to open the season, holding off the Orlando Magic for a 101-98 victory in Oklahoma City.
Kuchar, English set mark in Shootout win
Golf: Matt Kuchar and Harris English ran away with the Franklin Templeton Shootout in Naples, Fla., shooting a 14-under 58 in the final-round scramble to break the tournament course record.
Kuchar and English finished at 34-under 182. They opened with a 64 on Friday in modified alternate-shot play and had a 60 on Saturday in better ball.
The duo beat Retief Goosen and Fredrik Jacobsen (61) by seven strokes, matching the tournament record for margin of victory set by Curtis Strange and Mark O’Meara in 1989 in the inaugural event.
Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter had a 59 to finish third at 26 under, and Chris DiMarco and Billy Horschel were fourth at 24 under after a 60.
• Garcia claims Thailand Golf Championship: Sergio Garcia won for the Thailand Golf Championship with a 4-under 68, beating Henrik Stenson by four strokes in Chonburi, Thailand.
Garcia had a 22-under 266 total at Amata Spring for his fourth career Asian Tour title.
Stenson also finished with a 68 and France’s Alexander Levy took third at 14 under after a 69.
• Cink duo take Father/Son challenge: Stewart and Connor Cink won the Father/Son Challenge in Orlando, Fla., making two eagles in their final five holes for a three-stroke victory in the scramble event.
Connor Cink, a Clemson freshman, put the duo in front with a 30-foot eagle putt at No. 14. His father capped the day with a 20-foot eagle putt at No. 18, the last of nine consecutive 3s in a back-nine 27. They finished with an 11-under 61 for 22-under total.
Steve and Sam Elkington and Vijay and Qass Singh tied for second. The Singhs shot 61, and the Elkingtons 63.
• Pinckney leads Web.com Q-school: Scott Pinckney shot a 7-under 65 on PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta, Calif., to take a one-stroke lead after the fourth round of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament.
Pinckney had a 21-under 267 total after 72 holes in the six-day, 108-hole event that will determine player rankings for the Web.com Tour season.
Scotland’s Jimmy Gunn, sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene Casino, was second after a 66, also on the Nicklaus course.
Orange squeeze out win over Red Storm
Men’s basketball: C.J. Fair and Tyler Ennis each scored 21 points, and No. 2 Syracuse pulled out a 68-63 victory over St. John’s in New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Ennis had 15 points in the first half as Syracuse (10-0) took a 39-27 lead. The Red Storm (6-3) chipped away and were able to tie it at 53 on three free throws by Rysheed Jordan with 9:16 to go. There were then four lead changes and three ties.
• Tigers extend homecourt winning streak: Jabari Brown scored 15 points while Jordan Clarkson and Earnest Ross both added 12 to help No. 24 Missouri (10-0) to a 66-60 basketball win over Western Michigan (5-4) in Columbia, Mo. Missouri stretched its NCAA-best homecourt winning streak to 25 games and has won 80 straight games against nonconference opponents at Mizzou Arena dating to the 2005-06 opener.
Matt wins slalom race as U.S. struggles
Miscellany: Veteran Mario Matt of Austria safely protected his first-run lead to edge Sweden’s Mattias Hargin by .53 seconds and Italian veteran Patrick Thaler by .78 to win a World Cup slalom race in Val d’Isere, France.
In another disappointing day for the United States, neither Ted Ligety, who finished the first run in 39th, nor Bode Miller, who went off course, qualified for the second run.
• Worley wraps up giant slalom victory: World champion Tessa Worley of France sped to a combined time of 2 minutes, 7.62 seconds to deny Jessica Lindell-Vikarby of Sweden a second straight giant slalom victory, edging her by 0.37 seconds in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Tina Maze of Slovenia, the defending overall World Cup champion, matched her best result of the season in third, trailing Worley by 0.79.
• Murray honored by BBC: Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has been voted the BBC’s 60th Sports Personality of the Year, winning the accolade after becoming the first British man to lift the trophy at the All England Club in 77 years.
Murray was presented with the award in Florida by 18-time grand slam singles champion Martina Navratilova as training commitments kept him from traveling to the ceremony in the English city of Leeds.
