Spokane man dies after Saturday night accident
A Spokane man died Sunday night after the car he was riding in on Saturday night hit a ditch along state Highway 211 west of Newport.
David Pitts, 56, was a passenger in a car driven by Jeffrey H. Schoeny, 21, of Kapaa, Hawaii. Schoeny was headed south shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle about 12 miles west of Newport, according to the Washington State Patrol. The 1985 Toyota 4Runner veered into a ditch and went airborne before landing on its wheels.
Pitts was not wearing a seat belt, the WSP said. He died at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at Sacred Heart Medical Center, the WSP said.
Schoeny, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
The WSP said Schoeny was driving too fast for the conditions. Possible charges of negligent driving and not having insurance are pending, a news release said.
