Pedestrian killed when struck by pickup on 57th

Staff report
A man was struck and killed by a pickup truck at the height of rush hour traffic while attempting to walk across 57th Avenue near Regal Street. The pedestrian was headed south across the street when he was hit by a GMC pickup driving eastbound shortly after 5 p.m. He was not crossing at a crosswalk. The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup is cooperating with investigators, according to Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Chamberlin. Deputies don’t believe impairment or negligent driving were factors in the accident. The pedestrian was crossing the road after dark and was wearing dark clothing, making it difficult for the driver to see him and stop in time, Chamberlin said. “This is just a tragic situation where the pedestrian did not use one of the nice, well-lit crosswalks,” Chamberlin said. Eastbound lanes of 57th will be closed until 8:30 p.m., Chamberlin said.
