In brief: Glasses may have saved girl in drive-by shooting

SEATTLE – A Seattle teenager’s glasses may have saved her life in a drive-by shooting.

The Seattle Police Department said Sunday that a 16-year-old girl was lying on a couch inside her southeast Seattle residence Saturday night when gunfire erupted.

Authorities said a bullet struck the bridge of the girl’s glasses and apparently deflected away. The glasses broke, but the girl was not seriously injured.

She was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Several people were inside the home during the shooting, but no one else was hurt.

Investigators believe the teenager was not the intended victim. Gang detectives are investigating.

Smoking gas thief lit himself on fire, police say

PORTLAND – Authorities said a man in Portland caught on fire because he was smoking a cigarette while handling stolen gasoline.

Portland police said Sunday that 62-year-old Harry Frederick Suniville was treated for injuries after a fire that burned his pants and singed his hair. Authorities said Suniville had stolen a partially filled gas can from a nearby truck and began pouring the gas into his own vehicle. He was smoking a cigarette at the time.

Suniville has been charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, reckless burning and theft in the third degree. He was booked into jail and will be arraigned today.
