But he also faces the possibility that he could miss an extended period of time. • San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl will undergo right knee surgery next week, sidelining the rookie star for more than a month. General manager Doug Wilson said the team will know more about how much time Hertl will miss following the surgery. Hertl was hurt in a knee-on-knee collision with Los Angeles’ Dustin Brown last Thursday.

Hertl leads all rookies with 15 goals and 25 points this season. Out Houston guard James Harden sat out a second straight game for the Rockets with a sprained left ankle. Harden leads the team in scoring with 23.9 points a game. The Rockets were also without guard Patrick Beverley, who has a right hand injury, and center Omer Asik, who has missed the last nine games after suffering a right thigh bruise.

Extended SMU says football coach June Jones has agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep him in place through 2017. Jones won two Conference USA championships at SMU, which completed its first season in the American Athletic Conference this season. The Mustangs finished 5-7 overall, ending a streak of four straight bowl appearances. Jones has a 36-41 record at SMU and is 112-82 for his career.

Official The Minnesota Twins have finalized the contracts of right-hander Mike Pelfrey and catcher Kurt Suzuki. Pelfrey agreed more than a week ago to an $11 million, two-year deal. Suzuki agreed Friday to one year at $2.75 million.

Claimed The Chicago White Sox say they have claimed left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and lost infielder Brent Morel to the Toronto Blue Jays. The 26-year-old Surkamp sat out the entire 2012 season because of an elbow injury.
