In brief: Bomb scare delays Musharraf hearing

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – A bomb scare delayed the first hearing in a high treason case against former Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday, officials said.

Authorities on Tuesday found an explosive device and two pistols about half a mile away from Musharraf’s residence, police official Mohammed Ali said.

A lawyer for Musharraf told the court his client could not attend because of a “serious threat to his life.” The chief judge directed Musharraf to appear on Jan. 1.

Americans warned of visiting Honduras

WASHINGTON – The State Department on Tuesday cautioned travelers about the risks of visiting Honduras, known as the “murder capital of the world.”

In a travel warning, the department said American expatriates experience similar levels of crime as other population groups. Police forces have solved only two of the 50 killings of Americans since 2008, U.S. officials said.

Russia gives amnesty to Greenpeace activist

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – One of the Greenpeace activists detained in Russia’s Arctic has been granted amnesty, the environmental group said Tuesday.

A Greenpeace spokesman said the activist, Anthony Perrett of the United Kingdom, had been told he could collect paperwork for leaving Russia on Thursday.

Several more of the Greenpeace activists are expected to receive similar amnesty notifications.

The crew members were originally accused of piracy, a charge that was later changed to hooliganism.
