Announced The Chicago Cubs announced Friday they have agreed to a one-year contract with reliever Jose Veras that includes a club option for 2015. Veras is due $3.85 million next season, and the Cubs have a $5.5 million option for 2015. Veras was 0-5 with a 3.02 ERA in 67 games last season for the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers, who acquired him on July 29.

Injured Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson could miss three to five weeks with broken ribs. Ericsson left Monday night’s loss to the New York Islanders, Detroit’s most recent game, in the second period. He is expected to be evaluated again in two weeks to determine when he might come back. Ericsson has a goal and seven assists in 29 games this season. The injury puts the 29-year-old Swede’s availability in doubt for the Sochi Olympics.

• Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, is out indefinitely with a torn right pectoral muscle, leaving his status for the remainder of the season in question. Horford left during the first overtime of Thursday night’s 127-125 double-overtime win at Cleveland and did not return. He leads the team with 18.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

• New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony will likely miss both ends of the team’s home-and-home series with the Toronto Raptors because of a sprained left ankle. Anthony sat out the game Friday night in New York and coach Mike Woodson said he didn’t think Anthony would fly with the team for tonight’s game in Toronto. Anthony was hurt Monday in a victory at Orlando and missed his first game of the season Wednesday in a loss to Oklahoma City. The NBA’s No. 2 scorer has led the Knicks in scoring in every game he has played this season. J.R. Smith started in Anthony’s place.

• Michigan basketball star Mitch McGary is out indefinitely after deciding to have surgery on his lower back. McGary helped Michigan reach the Final Four last season when he was a freshman, and he was a preseason All-America selection after deciding to put off the NBA and return to the Wolverines for his sophomore year. McGary has averaged 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds this season.

Declared Fresno State receiver Davante Adams will skip his final two seasons of college to enter the NFL draft. Adams led the nation in receptions per game (10.1), total receptions (131) and touchdown catches (24) this season. He was also second in receiving yardage with a school-record 1,718. He sat out his first year as a redshirt so he is eligible for the draft.
