Dons top Pilots in overtime

Mark Tollefsen scored five of his 22 points in the final 25 seconds of overtime as San Francisco beat Portland 87-81 Saturday night in Portland, Ore.

Kevin Bailey, who had 24 points, gave the Pilots a 69-66 lead on a 3-point basket with 9 seconds left in regulation but Chris Adams answered with a 3-pointer of his own to send the game to overtime.

Following a 3-pointer by Bobby Sharp which brought Portland (8-5, 0-1) within three, Tollefsen’s three-point play extended the Dons lead to 83-77. Tollefsen added a pair of free throws with 2 seconds remaining in overtime to complete the scoring.

Avry Holmes scored 15 points while Kruize Pinkins and Matt Glover added 11 apiece for San Francisco (8-5, 1-0).

Cole Dickerson recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pilots made 10 of 20 3-pointers and committed just five turnovers but made only 11 of 19 free throws.

Loyola Marymount 87, BYU 76: Evan Payne scored a career-high 27 points and the Lions upset the Cougars in a conference opener in Los Angeles.

BYU (8-6, 0-1), picked by coaches to finish second in the league, never led after LMU scored 13 unanswered points to take a 17-5 lead with 13:53 left in the first half. The Lions (9-4, 1-0) maintained a double-digit lead thereafter.

Payne made a career-high 5 of 9 3-point attempts with the Lions hitting 8 of 17 for 47.1 percent. Anthony Ireland added 14 points.

BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth scored 18 points with Eric Mika adding 17 and Matt Carlino 13. Tyler Haws, averaging 23.2 points per game this season, made only 4 of 15 shots for 11 points.

Pepperdine 75, San Diego 64: Malcolm Brooks scored a career-high 20 points to lead Pepperdine to a 75-64 victory over San Diego in a another opener in Malibu, Calif.

Jeremy Major added 13 points and seven assists for the Waves (8-5, 1-0). His 3-pointer with 7:12 left gave Pepperdine the lead for good at 61-58 and his jumper with 1:32 to go put the Waves up 71-64.

Stacy Davis had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Brendan Lane added 18 points for Pepperdine.

Dennis Kramer’s 3-pointer for San Diego tied the game at 58-58, but Lane and Major answered with 10 straight points to give the Waves a 68-58 lead.

Johnny Dee led San Diego (9-5, 0-1) with 26 points.
