John Pugh, deputy county auditor, celebrated his 75th birthday “by recording deeds at the courthouse.”

 He also listed his secrets for a vital and happy old age.

• Smoke little, drink little and do not eat too much.

• Do not worry.

• Do not try to get along on less sleep than is required to rest your mind and body.

• Do not get to the office late.

• Cultivate your memory. “It is one of the most convenient files ever invented. The man who can rely on his mind conserves his brain.”

• Marry a good woman and then take an interest in your home and children.

From the accident beat: Ed Bergquist, a chauffeur, did not have a peaceful Christmas Day. He was drinking that morning at the Monogram Saloon, at Main Avenue and Bernard Street, when he apparently made a nuisance of himself by “bumming drinks.” The proprietor whacked Bergquist with his fist a few times and then forcibly ejected him onto the sidewalk.

Bergquist died several days later of a blood clot on the brain.
