GU: Women out, men stand firm
College basketball: The Gonzaga women were the lone Top 25 team to lose this past week, falling in overtime to WCC rival Saint Mary’s, and falling out of the AP poll for the first time this season.
With GU out, there are no mid-major teams left in the Top 25. It’s the first time since Nov. 21, 2011, that there isn’t a team from one of the mid-major conferences in the rankings.
• Arizona and Syracuse lead the same top five teams in the Associated Press men’s poll for the fourth straight week. Gonzaga stayed at No. 24.
In the USA Today coaches poll, the Zags remained at No. 21.
Sounders will host Tottenham
Soccer: The Seattle Sounders will host Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur in a summer exhibition match on July 19.
Seattle announced the friendly on Monday, adding to an impressive list of exhibitions the Sounders have hosted. The match will take place less than a week after the conclusion of the World Cup.
This will be Seattle’s first exhibition match since 2012 after not hosting a friendly last season. Seattle hosted Chelsea in 2012, Manchester United in 2011, and both Chelsea and FC Barcelona in 2009. The Sounders are winless in those four matches.
Tottenham’s visit is part of a preseason tour of the U.S. It is also scheduled to face the Chicago Fire on July 26.
