Jeffreys mistakenly released from jail, turns himself in

Despite a judge’s ruling Friday ordering Gregory D. Jeffreys, 53, held in the Spokane County Jail without bond, he was inadvertently released from the jail Friday night, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. “Once the mistake was realized, local law enforcement as well as U.S. Marshalls and the FBI were notified,” said Dep. Craig Chamberlin in a press release Saturday. An FBI agent contacted Jeffreys’ attorney and he turned himself back in to jail at 6:15 a.m. Chamberlin said an internal investigation is underway to find out how Jeffreys was released. Jeffreys faces 73 felony counts of fraud and money-laundering charges in which federal prosecutors allege he, his girlfriend, Shannon Stiltner, and his wife, Kimberly Jeffreys, used forged documents to defraud banks and others to invest in buildings that often didn’t exist.
