Whitworth 20-game winning streak ends

WALLA WALLA _ Whitman gained control with an 8-0 run in overtime and the Missionaries beat Whitworth 93-90 in a Northwest Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night.

The loss snapped the Pirates’ 20-game winning streak.

Whitworth’s Colton McCargar put the Pirates (20-2, 12-1) ahead by two with a late field goal in regulation, but Matt Mounier of Whitman (15-7, 9-4) tied the game with a bucket with 4.7 seconds to play.

The Pirates’ Wade Gebbers scored a career-high 27 points.

Whitworth can clinch its fourth straight outright NWC title with a win Saturday at home against George Fox.

Women

Tiffani Traver made five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points as Whitman caught fire in the second half and took over sole possession of third place in the Northwest Conference with an 81-62 win over Whitworth in Walla Walla.

The Missionaries (17-4, 10-3) made 17 of 32 shots in the second half, including 7 of 10 from beyond the arc.

Whitman’s Sarah Anderegg scored 19 points and Meghan White pulled down 19 rebounds – with nine coming on the offensive end. The Missionaries held a 22-8 advantage in second-chance points and won the rebounding battle 55-28.

Kayla Johnson scored 19 points and Katara Belton-Sharp added 13 for Whitworth (16-6, 9-4).
