Ferris snatches last district berth

Brittney Johnson made three 3-pointers and scored 23 points as Ferris held on late and claimed the final seed to the District 8 4A girls basketball tournament with a 69-64 win Friday at Central Valley.

Abby Liss added 18 points for the Saxons (11-10), who outscored the Bears (10-11) by 10 in the second half.

Ferris, which lived and died by the 3-pointer throughout the regular season, made 2 of 16 from beyond the arc in the first half and were 10 for 34 for the game.

Mariah Cunningham scored 21 of her game-high 26 points in the first half to lead CV. The Greater Spokane League’s scoring leader – Madison Hovren – added 24 points, with 14 coming at the free-throw line.

Ferris will play at Lewis and Clark tonight at 6 in a loser-out game.

1A Bi-District

Cashmere 59, Freeman 55: The Bulldogs rallied in the second half and defeated the Scotties (19-3) at West Valley. Cashmere trailed by four points at the half, but outscored Freeman 16-7 in the third quarter to regain control. Katie Vold scored 15 points and Molly McIntyre added 14 for the Scotties, who will play Riverside in a loser-out game today at 1 p.m.

Brewster 61, Riverside 29: The Bears – runners-up in last year’s State 2B tournament – dominated from the start and eased past the Rams (11-10) at West Valley. Chandler Smith scored 11 points for Brewster. Riverside was led by Marisa Pace and Courtney Davis, who scored nine points apiece.

Chelan 58, Newport 37: The Goats built a 17-point first-half lead and cruised past the Grizzlies (13-9) at West Valley. Courtney Wiese and Holly Malsbury scored 14 points apiece to lead Newport. The Grizzlies will play a 2:45 p.m. game against Lakeside.

Okanogan 55, Lakeside 39: Tied at the end of three quarters, Okanogan went on a 16-0 run in the final period to take the victory over the Eagles. Ashley Cook-Cox had 14 points for Lakeside (17-5).

District 9 1B

Tekoa-Oakesdale 42, St. John-Endicott 40: Cassandra Mendoza’s 3-pointer with a minute to play proved to be the difference as the Nighthawks (17-4) earned a state berth with a win over the visiting Eagles (16-6). Courtney Perry and Mattie Jo-Johnson scored eight points apiece for Tekoa-Oakesdale, which will play Colton next Friday at Colfax to determine the district’s top two seeds to the regional round of state.

Colton 72, Rosalia 25: The Wildcats (20-1) secured a state berth by routing the visiting Spartans (12-10). Colton’s Jenna Moser led four players in double figures with 16 points. The Wildcats outscored Rosalia 14-2 in the first quarter and led 30-7 at halftime.

Boys

1A Bi-District

Lakeside 79, Cashmere 72 (2OT): The Eagles (12-11) made all six of their free throws in the second overtime in their win at West Valley. Cody Watkins made three 3-pointers in the two extra periods and finished with 19 points. Conner Moffatt and Coleton Collins scored 15 points each and Cameron Gay added 13 for Lakeside.

Lakeside will play Brewster at 6:45 tonight at West Valley. Okanogan will play Medical Lake at 2:45.

Brewster 44, Medical Lake 36: The Bears pulled away with a 12-2 third-quarter run and beat the Cardinals (15-8) at West Valley. Tellas Johnson scored 11 points for Medical Lake, which led by four points at halftime but was outscored 23-11 in the second half.

Chelan 31, Chewelah 24: The Goats took control with a 13-5 second-quarter run and beat the Cougars (17-5) at West Valley. Chelan made all six of their fourth-quarter free throws to seal the win. Deylin Peone tallied a game-high nine points for Chewelah, which will play Riverside at 1 p.m. in a loser-out game.

Okanogan 70, Riverside 42: The Bulldogs pulled away in the second half and routed the Rams (6-15) at West Valley. Andrew Kramer scored a game-high 20 points and Tyler Axtell added 10 for Riverside, but the Rams were outscored by 18 points after halftime.
