In brief: Fire training Tuesday will involve donated home

MILLWOOD – The Spokane Valley Fire Department will use a home at 9621 E. Empire Ave. in Millwood for training Tuesday. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., smoke and flames will at times be visible from the home, which was donated to the department for training purposes.

Empire Avenue will be closed between Woodruff Road and Boeing Road while the training is under way, but nearby homeowners will be allowed in and out. Traffic will be rerouted north on Woodruff Road to Dalton Avenue.

The home will be torn down and removed by the owner after the training is complete.

Stormwater meeting planned Wednesday

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley will host a community meeting on plans to improve stormwater drainage along Bettman Road and Dickey Street between 11th and 14th avenues. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Park Place Assisted Living, 511 S. Park Road.

Plans currently call for the addition of swales and underground piping, and the possible removal of landscaping that was installed on the public right of way.

The project is scheduled for this summer and is expected to last between four and eight weeks. Traffic impacts will also be discussed at the meeting.

Sheriff scheduled to speak at business group meeting

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Business Association will hold a meeting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Spokane Valley Fire Administration Building, 2120 N. Wilbur Road.

The guest speaker will be Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich. He is expected to speak about the impact of property crimes on the business community.

Applicants for planning commission sought

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley is now accepting applications for a vacancy on its planning commission.

The vacancy was created when Commissioner Rod Higgins was appointed to the City Council this week. Those applying for the position should have knowledge and/or interest in planning, zoning, transportation and building.

Applicants must reside within Spokane Valley city limits. Applications are available on the city’s website at www.spokanevalley.org or by calling (509) 720-5102. The deadline is 4 p.m. March 4.

The mayor will select a candidate for the position and his decision must be affirmed by a vote of the City Council.
