Hired The New Orleans Saints have hired Rob Ryan as their new defensive coordinator and added Stan Kwan as an assistant special teams coach. Ryan, the brother of New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, spent the past two NFL seasons as Dallas’ defensive coordinator and was fired after last season, when his defense ranked 19th.
Suspended Mississippi State has suspended basketball guard Jalen Steele indefinitely for violating team rules. Steele, a junior, is averaging 9.5 points a game with 11 starts this season.
Died Former West Point quarterback Doug Kenna, a member of the 1944 undefeated national championship team and former president of the National Association of Manufacturers, has died. He was 88. Kenna died Jan. 28 in North Palm Beach, Fla.
• Former Washington Senators broadcaster Shelby Whitfield, who enjoyed a long career with AP Radio and ABC Radio, has died at a rehabilitation center in Jackson, N.J. He was 77. Whitfield called Senators games in 1969 and 1970. He later hosted a local radio show featuring guests such as Redskins quarterbacks Sonny Jurgensen and Billy Kilmer.
Out The Atlanta Hawks say they are optimistic guard Lou Williams will be ready for training camp following reconstructive surgery on his right knee to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Williams was the Hawks’ third- leading scorer with an average of 14.1 ppg.
• Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says outfield prospect Bryce Brentz accidentally shot himself in the leg last month, but could recover in time to play in spring training. Cherington said that Brentz was cleaning the gun when it went off. The bullet passed through Brentz’s left leg. Brentz was a first-round draft pick by the Red Sox in 2010. He hit a combined .290 with 17 home runs and 76 RBIs last season in Double-A and Triple-A.
Reassigned The Columbus Blue Jackets have reassigned defenseman David Savard to their American Hockey League affiliate in Springfield, Mass. The 22-year-old Savard has totaled 44:35 of ice time in three games played with Columbus. In 34 games earlier this season with Springfield he had three goals, 18 assists and a plus-12 rating. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound defenseman has two goals and eight assists in 34 career NHL games.
Reinstated The World Anti-Doping Agency has reinstated its accredited lab in Madrid less than two months after it was suspended because of the improper handling of urine samples. WADA says the three-month suspension has been lifted ahead of time after the lab had “successfully complied with the requirements for early reinstatement.”
