Notre Dame tops Louisville in 5-OT thriller
College men: Cameron Biedscheid scored on a layup with 1:19 left in the fifth overtime, and Eric Atkins and Pat Connaugton added free throws in the final 19 seconds as No. 25 Notre Dame overcame an eight-point deficit in regulation to beat No. 11 Louisville 104-101 Saturday night in South Bend, Ind.
Russ Smith had a chance to tie it, but his 3-point attempt missed before Notre Dame students flooded the court to celebrate. It marked the sixth time in the last eight meetings that a game between the Fighting Irish (19-5, 7-6 Big East) and the Cardinals (19-5, 7-4) went into overtime.
Both teams missed crucial free throws in the final minute. Atkins missed two with 37 seconds left and Montrezi Harrell did the same for Louisville with 24 seconds left.
Jerian Grant, who fouled out with 1:57 left in the first overtime, led the Irish with 19 points.
Chane Behanan had 30 points and 15 rebounds for Louisville.
• Badgers nip Wolverines: Ben Brust hit a shot from just inside midcourt to tie the game at the end of regulation and added a tie-breaking 3 with less than 40 seconds left in overtime as Wisconsin beat No. 3 Michigan 65-62 on Saturday in Madison, Wis.
Brust scored 14 points for the Badgers (17-7, 8-3 Big Ten), while Jared Berggren added 13.
Trey Burke scored 19 points for Michigan (21-3, 8-3), while Tim Hardaway Jr. added 18.
• Kansas drops third straight: Romero Osby scored 17 points, Steven Pledger added 15 and Oklahoma held off No. 5 Kansas 72-66 in Norman, Okla., to give the Jayhawks (19-4, 7-3 Big 12) their first three-game losing streak in eight years.
The Sooners (15-7, 6-4) snapped a 10-game losing streak in the series.
• Pitt rallies past Cincinnati: Tray Woodall scored 14 points and led a late surge that sent No. 23 Pittsburgh (20-5, 8-4) to a 62-52 victory over No. 17 Cincinnati (18-6, 6-5) in Cincinnati, keeping the momentum going for one of the Big East’s hottest teams.
• Miami win streak hits 11: Miami hit a school record-tying 15 3-pointers and the eighth-ranked Hurricanes (19-3, 10-0 ACC) extended their winning streak to 11 games with an 87-61 victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels (16-7, 6-4) in Coral Gables, Fla.
• Rebels upset Lobos: Anthony Bennett had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the UNLV (18-6, 5-4 Mountain West) to a 64-55 victory over No. 15 New Mexico (20-4, 7-2) in Las Vegas.
• Illinois State shocks Creighton: Tyler Brown scored 23 of his 27 points in the second half and Illinois State (15-10, 6-7 Missouri Valley) held on for a 75-72 upset win over No. 16 Creighton (20-5, 9-4) in Omaha, Neb.
Sims, Griner propel top-ranked Baylor
College women: Odyssey Sims scored 18 points and Brittney Griner sparked No. 1 Baylor’s game-clinching second-half run with her 13th career dunk, leading the Lady Bears (22-1, 12-0 Big 12) to an easy 75-48 win over Texas (9-13, 2-9) in Austin, Texas.
• Notre Dame routs Seton Hall: Ariel Braker matched her career high with 15 points to help No. 2 Notre Dame (22-1, 10-0 Big East) roll to a 69-50 win over Seton Hall (8-15, 3-7) in South Orange, N.J., for the Irish’s 17th straight victory.
Nuggets cruise to ninth straight win
NBA: Danilo Gallinari scored 19 points, Kenneth Faried added 17 and the Denver Nuggets won their ninth straight game with a 111-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Cleveland.
• Pistons stop Bucks: Charlie Villanueva hit a 3-pointer with 9.7 seconds left and former Eastern Washington standout Rodney Stuckey sealed the win with two free throws as the Detroit Pistons beat the Milwaukee Bucks 105-100 in Milwaukee.
• Thomas shines for Kings: Former Washington Huskies star Isaiah Thomas scored 25 points and Marcus Thornton had 24 for the Sacramento Kings in a 120-109 victory over the Utah Jazz in Sacramento, Calif.
Smith leads Coyotes to shootout victory
NHL: Mike Smith made 33 saves through overtime and then turned aside two more shots in the shootout to carry the Phoenix Coyotes to a 1-0 win over the San Jose Sharks in San Jose, Calif.
• Devils cool off Penguins: Adam Henrique and Bobby Butler scored power-play goals in the third period, and the New Jersey Devils extended their winning streak to four games with a 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh in Newark, N.J., that snapped the Penguins’ five-game winning streak.
• Montoya sparks Jets: Al Montoya made 33 saves, and Alex Ponikarovsky scored the only goal in the Winnipeg Jets’ 1-0 win over the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa.
Snedeker, Hahn tied for Pebble Beach lead
Golf: Brandt Snedeker shot a 68 for his ninth straight round in the 60s to tie 31-year-old rookie James Hahn (66) for the lead at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, Calif.
They were at 12-under 202.
Chris Kirk is one shot back after carding a 64. Patrick Reed is at 10-under.
• Mediate leads by three strokes: Rocco Mediate shot an 11-under-par 61, setting a course record and building a three- shot lead over Tom Pernice Jr. heading into the final round of the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.
American Lepchenko ties Fed Cup match
Tennis: American Varvara Lepchenko won in her Fed Cup singles debut to lift the U.S. team to a 1-1 tie against Italy in Rimini, Italy, after Sara Errani beat Jamie Hampton 6-2, 6-1.
Lepchenko rallied past Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
• Cilic, Melzer in Zagreb final: Top-seeded Marin Cilic will face Jurgen Melzer in the Zagreb Indoors final today in Zagreb, Croatia.
Cilic rallied past defending champ Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Melzer defeated Robin Haase 7-6 (2), 6-3.
Svindal captures men’s downhill title
Miscellany: Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway won the men’s downhill title at the Alpine skiing world championships in Schladming, Austria, after a powerful run down the Planai course that no one came close to matching.
• City’s title defense rocked: The English Premier League trophy slipped further from Manchester City’s grasp after the defending champion lost 3-1 at Southampton and gave Manchester United the opportunity to move 12 points in front.
• Upset win for Canada’s Reynolds: Kevin Reynolds of Canada upstaged favorite Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan to win the Four Continents event with a near-flawless free skate in Osaka, Japan.
